Re: Transformers: Dark of the Moon - Discuss, Grading, Reviews (SPOILE

Do any "Decepticons" ever deceive anyone? If you're going to try to deceive people, why call yourselves "Decepticons"?

I mean, they chose that English name, right? It wasn't an accident, was it? Do the robots on Cybertron speak English? Did the evolve it from a mix of Cybergerman and Cyberlatin? And why call your home planet Cybertron instead of the Cyber-equivalent of "Earth", as in "ground"? Does "tron" mean "soil" on Cybertron? Is there any soil on Cybertron? Who built these fucking robots, anyway?

And now that they've come to Earth, learned English and discovered that, by wild coincidence, their name sounds a lot like "Deceiver-bot", do they not intend to actually deceive anyone? Because it sounds as though they try to kill everyone all the time without any subtlety, except for when they hide between movies. Too bad they weren't called "Hide-ertrons"!

But wait, doesn't this Sentinel Prime guy deceive the good guys? Doesn't that make him the first Decepticon? But didn't he decide to become the first Decepticon in order to end the war started by the prior Decepticons?

Aaaaarrrrrgggggghhhhh

Re: Transformers: Dark of the Moon - Discuss, Grading, Reviews (SPOILE

Bah, I think you're overanalyzing the names and languages, which were secondary to everything else in the movie. Why was Sinestro called Sinestro in Green Lantern instead of "Benevolentro" or some other equivalent? For that matter, why choose the name Bizarro as Superman's villain? Do you think "Normallo" would be menacing enough or appropriate for the character?

Names like "Autobots" and "Decepticons" were chosen by the writers to fit the characters and their roles in the story, with or without any Earthly reference. For all we know, those names could be the rough English translations of the Cybertronian equivalent. To me, Optimus Prime sounds a lot better (and much less lame) than "Oscar the Truck" and Bumblebee is better than "Yellow Fast Car."

Re: Transformers: Dark of the Moon - Discuss, Grading, Reviews (SPOILE

Illogical naming is the least implausible element of giant space robots that turn into Earth cars.

Re: Transformers 3: Can a fan of G1 enjoy this movie?

Which was never in the original G1 series, it was introduced in the animated movie, and nominally talked about in the series that followed that.
Odd statement. The season of the show after the 1986 movie is considered part of the G1 animated series and the Matrix passing issue was addressed in at least three different episodes including an ep of "Five Faces of Darkness" and "The Return of Optimus Prime".

Re: Transformers: Dark of the Moon - Discuss, Grading, Reviews (SPOILE

Y'all are missing the satire. ;)

Names like "Autobots" and "Decepticons" were chosen by the toy designers to fit the toys and their plastic color schemes in the toy line.
FTFY. ;)

Re: Transformers: Dark of the Moon - Discuss, Grading, Reviews (SPOILE

Aye, and don't forget with or without Earthly references. ;)

Re: Transformers: Dark of the Moon - Discuss, Grading, Reviews (SPOILE

Blame Marvel comics it's their idea

Re: Transformers: Dark of the Moon - Discuss, Grading, Reviews (SPOILE

I want to comment on how worthless Megatron has been in this movie trilogy, but then I remember the cartoon.

------------

Soundwave - "Megatron. Rainbow detected."

Megatron - "Decepticons! RETREAT!!"

Do any "Decepticons" ever deceive anyone? If you're going to try to deceive people, why call yourselves "Decepticons"?

Because for Decepticons treachery is a good thing.

The Autobot/Decepticon divide is fundamentally Manichean. The Autobots believe in altruistic virtues, the Deccepticons value cunning, selfishness and power.

It's not like a smart choice of name, but nobody's ever accused the Decepticons of intelligence.

Transformers: Dark of the Moon

Brace yourselves......

My Grade: B-

-----------------------------------------------------------

I went into this movie all prepared to hate it, come back to this thread and rip into it. Bad professional reviews, mediocre word-of-mouth here on the board with some bad reviews, then the two (long) stream of consciousness videos from Spoony and The Cinema Snob both led me to believe this movie was going to be terrible and not much removed from its predecessor which, in my words, skull-fucked the sense out of you over the course of its running time.

This movie? Is a bit more gentle, comparatively. I gave the first movie a grade in the C range (C-, IIRC) which is about the lowest I give out unless the movie was really bad which the second movie was getting probably the lowest grade I'm likely to give out in a flat D.

Here, we actually manage to get an entertaining movie.

The continuity of this movie is hard to pin down compared to the others, in a V.O. I believe Optimus tells us a year has passed between the time-frame of this movie and the Autobots' arrival on Earth, in which it seems like something closer to four years have passed in the movie's world (in the first movie Sam was a senior in high-school, in the second movie he's in college, in this movie he's trying to get into the working world) and the same length of time has passed for us.

Anyway, Shia LeBouf's Sam is an unemployed job-seeker living with his current girlfriend in her multi-story D.C. loft that probably costs her $2,000 a month and she's subletting. Sam has had a break-up with Megan Fox's character is now dating some reedy blond chick whose name escapes me as I am not good with names, I'll just call her by the actress' name, Rose. Sam has had trouble finding a job as it seems that saving the world twice in as many years, getting a medal from President Obama and having a solid education while also getting job-references from prominent people doesn't make one a very valuable prospective employee. Hey, it's a down job market.

Shia's Autobot car, Bumblebee is traveling the world with the rest of the Autobots doing various missions for the American government leaving Shia with a crappy car to drive around town in a city with a pretty damn remarkable public transportation system, at the same time Shia is being a Debbie Down and bitches about his life as pretty much being a kept-man to his hot girlfriend. Yeah, sucks to be you, Shia.

Anyway, through a series of events Shia ends up back in the mix in a fight between the Autobots and the Decepticons over a series of devices recovered from the moon that will either replace Earth with the machines' home world of Cybertron or simply put Cybertron in Earth orbit. It's not clear which it is. There's a bit of a conspiracy involving an Earth businessman who thinks it's a good business paln to enslave all of mankind, a power struggle between the military, an NSA operative and the Autobots, and a recovered Prime who has a centuries old mission to complete using advanced Cybertron technology.

Really, the plot and story is murky and while being basically simple is also a bit convoluted but it does bring with it some nice twists.

The movie is not without its faults, however. I still think the transformers' transformations from vehicle to robot is still too quick and complex to be appreciated, while also times not being framed very well, the movie is filled with a lot of characters who are mostly pointless, the humor sometimes is a bit forced (though not as bad as int he previous movie) and the climatic action sequence just goes on too long for too much. This is a movie that could have really spent more time in the editing room; for example in one scene Shia has tethered himself to a Decepticon using a grappling hook and we spend several minutes watching him getting swung through the air while screaming before he's able to get a bomb onto the robot to destroy it, too many scenes involving Shia with his parents that weren't needed, Shia's trouble finding a hob, Shia's problems at work, lots of trimming in the action scenes and "plot" set-up. This bitch is 2 1/2 hours long and it doesn't need to be. Lots of trimming could have been done.

The movie improves over the former by pretty much either reducing or eliminating racial stereotypes, there's some there but not nearly as bad, in fact I quite enjoyed Shia's two little "pet" robots. Thankfully Skid and Mudflaps the two illiterate racial-stereotype robots from the previous movie are nowhere to be seen.

Another fault this movie has is Shia who is otherwise fine to watch unless he's screaming, emoting, yelling, or trying to be "funny." Other than that I can handle him.

The movie makes a vast improvement with the female lead as Rose brings something to this movie that Megan didn't have in others. Screen presence. She brings some emotion, depth, charm and warmth to the screen and her relationship with Shia is actually a touch bit believable, yeah there's a few gratuitous shots of her various qualities but it's one of those movies where that is sort-of expected, the funniest for me comes near the end where she stands against a slo-mo background looking hot while stuff blows up behind her. She also has the amazing ability to run around and survive in a giant battle while wearing pumps.

I really liked this movie, I had a good time. It's probably too long and has plenty of stupid and annoying moments (mostly ones involving Shia and his lungs) but it actually has some fun to it and makes for pretty decent escapist entertainment. All said, the Rifftrax guys will have a field-day with this movie.

I also saw this movie in 3D which I though worked really well for this movie, not too many gimmick "things sticking through the screen" moments, that 3D didn't have what I call the Colorform Effect and it had a good sense of depth, I think comparing to Avatar is fairly apt, though I think Avatar's bar is still a bit higher, but this movie is probably one of the better ones I've seen in 3D since the trope became the norm. But wearing those glasses over my own glasses for 2.5 hours is a bit annoying and gave me a touch of eye-strain.

Still, fun movie. I'll openly admit it.

I enjoyed this movie. And, keep in mind, I really dis-like the other movies. This is not likely a movie I'll see again on its own as it's not quite that good, but the DVD will bought for sure but, again, only for the Rifftrax.

Re: Transformers: Dark of the Moon - Discuss, Grading, Reviews (SPOILE

I know it's the third movie in a series, and I realize the novelty has probably worn off a bit, but the thing I really miss most from the first movie is the sense of freakin wonder. We're talking about giant alien robots that transform into cars and trucks, yet the movie has such a ho-hum attitude towards it all now. Many of the transformations happen off screen or in a background corner, and the music doesn't even try to make it seem awe-inspiring anymore.

In fact the only characters who seem remotely amazed by all this are the wacky annoying ones like Malkovich.

Re: Transformers 3: Can a fan of G1 enjoy this movie?

i'm a G1 fan who also bought a load of the RiD Autobots and RiD Megatron and i fucking love the movies. like BDJ says, it's FUCKING LIVE ACTION TRANSFORMERS! my inner 8 year old gets to cut loose and love them. it's transformers. in live action. on the cinema screen. how can anyone NOT love that?

Star Trek '09 was a Star Trek movie but plenty of people don't love it. I think it was good and if it brought even one more person into Star Trek in general it was worth it, but I also think it's been a bit over-hyped. That being said, it certainly isn't as bad as some people would have you believe.

Plenty of people also don't love The Animated Series, or...well...let's just say the fact that something is (more or less, YMMV) part of a franchise does not require that fans love it.

I'd rather have no Transformers movie than a bad one, as evidenced by my decision to pass on the second film (granted it's possible I'd enjoy it, but I doubt it based on almost all of the feedback I've seen). Similarly I love X-Men but passed on Last Stand, and I don't regret that decision either.

Re: Transformers: Dark of the Moon - Discuss, Grading, Reviews (SPOILE

A+. Best movie of the year. Haters gonna hate. :)

Re: Transformers: Dark of the Moon - Discuss, Grading, Reviews (SPOILE

two points:

the Transformers were created by Primus, god of Light to protect him in his prison of an asteroid from Unicron, the God of Chaos. the Matrix is Primus' life-force, which embues the Transformers with life. (that's from the G1 comic. fuck the cartoon and all that 'slaves of the Quintessons' shit)

secondly, Prime's voice over said it was yearS since they'd arrived. nothing was clearly said about how long it was since Egypt, though clearly long enough for Sam to graduate, Simmons to write and publish a book, energon detectors to be installed world-wide and the HHS offices to be turned into NEST command.

Re: Transformers: Dark of the Moon - Discuss, Grading, Reviews (SPOILE

I just saw the film but I have to think about it before I give a grade.

BUT I did however want to say that the 3D presentation was *EXCELLENT*, almost rivaling 'Avatar'. Great sense of depth a nice camera angles. I am impressed, Micheal Bay. At least with the technical aspects.

Re: Transformers: Dark of the Moon - Discuss, Grading, Reviews (SPOILE

Probably B-/C+. A lot better than the second film. Special effects were incredible, and the 3D looked amazing. Plot was average. Did like the references to Spock.

Re: Transformers: Dark of the Moon - Discuss, Grading, Reviews (SPOILE

Yeah, like I said, the 3D was really well done.

I do have to wonder why it is that they've installed the detectors around for finding transformers, they've been working with the Autobots for years but why the military still fights the Decepticons with ordinary weapons, why didn't the Autobots provide them with weaponry that'd, you know, stand a chance against a 20-story tall robot?

Re: Transformers: Dark of the Moon - Discuss, Grading, Reviews (SPOILE

I would assume because humans at this stage of our development would be untrustworthy with such advanced weapons and could be used against the Autobots. The second movie proved that the administration was weary of their presence on Earth.
