Trailer for "Firefly" fan film

Looks interesting. I'll be checking it out again when there's more than just a trailer. I also added the links and a brief description to the pinned Fan Films thread.

As an obvious Firefly fan......that looks like ass!!!

Fan films -- always suck, always will.

The first sentence is an opinion, albeit less than polite. The second sentence is so close to trolling that it isn't even funny. Let me remind you of the Board Rules on show criticism ZZYFRX (emphasis added):
It's fine to say a certain aspect of Star Trek is bad, as long as you don't insult the people who think otherwise, and as long as you actually back up what you say. Jumping in and shouting "Kirk sucks!" is not an acceptable form of constructive criticism.
The next time you decide to make a post like this, you better be damn sure you back it up.

Someone point out to him the fan films being done with artists from Star trek series and Sulu starring in one, eh?

Thanks for the link.

As for the "fan films suck" remark, why does a fan film have to be held to the same standard as a multi-million-dollar project made by professionals? Answer: it doesn't. If the people making the movie enjoy themselves, and if they find an appreciative audience, then that's a hell of a thing. :)

But still valid.

Okay, fine.

- The acting "sucks"! That's the major problem with most fan films, people think they can grab their friends and stick them in front of a camera and they'll produce something entertaining. It doesn't work.

- The obvious no-budget "sucks". Granted, fans usually don't have any money for sets, costumes and SFX, but in my opinion it means that they should stick to making something a bit more realistic.

- The camera work "sucks"! They tried doing cool pans and rack/zooms, but failed miserably. It was painful to watch.

In summation, if you're going to set out to make a movie, at least try to know what your doing. From what little was shown in the trailer, I suspect that a bunch of monkey's at the zoo flinging their feces at unsuspecting onlookers would be more entertaining.

How's that?

You could've said so in the first place but you didn't, so I have to wonder what your motive for even being here in the first place is.

I'm under the impression that the point of the fan films isn't to look professional but to be entertaining for the intended audience. I'm not going to evaluate a fan film on professional standards unless their stated aim is for those standards.

If you were a teacher, would you grade a third grader's paper the same as a tenth grader's? Would you grade a high school assignment the same as one from college at the graduate level?

The closest equivalent I know to fan films and the groups of folks who work on many of them is nonprofessional community theatre, which IMAO is a wonderful thing on all kinds of levels - but rarely to be confused with Broadway.

Damn the Photon Torpedeos, Full Speed Ahead.....

If I were you ZZYFRX, I'd demand my money back....

Re: Damn the Photon Torpedeos, Full Speed Ahead.....

OK folks, while many may not agree with ZZYFRX's generalizations, turning this thread into being about him rather than discussing the actual topic probably isn't going to be all that much fun.

Re: Damn the Photon Torpedeos, Full Speed Ahead.....

Firefly was clever and original, so I am glad to see that the fan-film "bug" (pun-intended) has caught up to that show. I had a hard time hearing the dialogue on some of the scenes on the preview, so hopefully they will loop the dialogue on those scenes. You gotta give 'em credit for making the movie, tho.

Damn the Photon Torpedeos, Full Speed Ahead.....

The original quote was in reference to mines, incidentally, not the self-propelled warheads we commonly think of as "torpedoes" today.

This bit of trivia brought to you by my annoyance with any form of dismissiveness.

Re: Damn the Photon Torpedeos, Full Speed Ahead.....

Firefly had some good stories, was well casted and lived in a very interesting universe. Unfortunately, as tends to happen with good SF on FOX, it got juggled around and eventually got canceled.

I think that there's some fertile ground for some fan productions based on Firefly. Maybe this one won't be for everyone. But one might be down the road. In the meantime, I wish these folks all the best.

Re: Damn the Photon Torpedeos, Full Speed Ahead.....

Likewise. Though I find it suspect that suddenly Mr. FLOPP!!!!!111 is hanging out around here, I'm glad to see we're getting more traffic in this forum.

I yike it.

Looks great guys - can't wait to see the finished product. It's got a great feel - very firefly.

As someone who is very much involved with Into the Black, I'd like to thank those of you who are saying supportive things, and keeping an open mind. Those involved are mostly amateurs with an interest in film, but there are some amongst our cast/crew with actual industry experience (over 30 years between the 4 of them).

The problems with the sound should be fixed during post production, what you hear in the trailer is a raw cut, without any sound editing.

This project is basically a labour of love for those invovled, because we're all Browncoats, who weren't finished watching Firefly. For the record, we have the "unofficial" blessing of Joss Whedon, and Nathan Fillion also made a financial contribution to the effort. We even have music being done for us (including the song from the trailer) by Rob Kuhlman, who did the music for the Firefly/Serenity fan documentary "Done the Impossible".

If anyone has any questions, or anything constructive to say, I'm happy to read and answer. All we ask is that people not judge us too harshly before they see the final product...but even then, we know some people aren't going to like us no matter what we do.

(non constructive, negative attacks will be ignored)
