Toys out early!

Re: New Trek Toys?

Love Em' or Hate Em'?

Well, it's obvious that I'm a fan of the toy of the ship but I'm actually quite impressed with the new action figures as well. Very detailed with full articulation and faces that actually look like the actors. :techman:

The props... not so much based on what I saw on a YouTube video that a dude on eBay had.

The seem pretty cheaply made and the tricorder has a big sticker across the top of it where the sensors go.

The communicator doesn't seem that bad and I dig the nozzle flip on the phaser but the construction of it seems very flimsy.

Re: New Trek Toys?

I only bought the three prop toys, having no interest in the others. They're pretty cool. Though the comm could have more features, it's emerged as my dark horse favorite by virtue of feeling the sturdiest of the props and having a nifty magnetic latch on the lid to hold it closed. The phaser is also pretty neat, and feels the most substantial of all three toys. The chrome looks a lot less silly in person (which hasn't stopped me from filling the screw holes and seams on the two I bought in preparation for a repaint ). In some ways, I'm most disappointed in the tricorder, because its so damn small. It probably has the coolest features of any of the toys, but seriously looks like a toy, rather than a replica of one of the screen props. It would certainly fit with Playmate's history of making seriously undersized tricorders. It's too bad, because the tricorder was the one I was most anticipating.

Now, I say this not having seen any images of the real prop from the film; it's possible that it really is this small, as there's an interview floating around out there with one of the production designers recounting how the actors were requesting the tricorders be made smaller so they'd be easier to handle during the action scenes. But there's a number of aspects to the design that suggests it's intened for two-handed use, which on the toy just can't happen. Plus the display on top is so small, being about the size of a few postage stamps laid end-to-end, that it's almost impossible to read it without holding it six inches from your face. And I'm in my twenties, so it's not like I have Old Man Vision. On the plus side, the spring-loaded doors and automated power-up and shut-down sounds are crazy cool, and light sequences and sound effects beat the pants off the old TNG tricorder the company made back in the '90s, which only had one flashing LED and a flashlight bulb behind the main screen. So I'd still recommend it, just not as a way to have faithful, inexpensive prop replica.*

*(Reserving the right to change my mind, of course, if it does turn out to be faithful in size.)

Re: New Trek Toys?

Except for the Enterprise toy, I can't say I care much for them either way.

But they are toys, which means that it's not important for me to like them. Kids should like them.

Re: New Trek Toys?

They're not the best quality I've seen, but I bought most of them for my future kid, who is going to love Trek whether he likes it or not!

Re: New Trek Toys?

Well, the prop and ship toys are good, look well thought out and built. Especially for Playmates.

When the got the rights to the toys again i did the 'Picard's face in hand' move.

But the figures are terrible. I was hoping Art Asylum would produce them to the astounding quality we got from their Trek range, but alas, we didnt get them.:(

Imagine each figure with a part of the bridge. Fabulous just thinking about it.

But hey, we got what we got, no use complaining.

Re: New Trek Toys?

i think the ship is good quality. the phaser is kinda cheap looking. i think the figures are nice too. a lot of detail on them.

Re: New Trek Toys?

If the pricing up here were closer to what they should be because of the exchange rate, then they're not so bad, but $25CAD for the phaser/communicator and $50CAD for the ship.....they're pushing it...

I could have ordered it all from newforce for probably the same cost in the end :P but of course I wanted them now so I didn't do that.

Re: New Trek Toys?

I have purchased the ship, it is coming on Tuesday, and that is really the only thing I am interested in buying. However, on my next trip to wally world I will check out the action figures.

Here's the "finished" piece. Im happy with it, I added some dirtyness with light gray promarkers and just smudged em a bit. Looks like its had some oil over it or something. :)

I was going to fill the holes in, but decided against it in case I want to tinker with the electronics at some point in the future. Hope you guys like it :P

Very nice job! I like what you have done with it.

I'm just wondering if anyone has come across the key chains by Basic fun? I'd quite like one of the new Enterprise!

Looks good! :techman:

Merging this with the other Trek Toys thread -- please stand by...

Well, I wanted to buy the new toys -- but they look too cheap. Sloppy sculps, bad paint jobs...excess plastic "flashing"...

The big figures seem to bear little resemblence to the actors who play them. Otherwise, the quality on those looks ok.

The Enterprise toy suffers from the same thing the other Playmates ships suffer from -- not enough detail...and inaccurate.

Nice packaging on all though -- but I don't buy for the packaging.

I'll pass.

Someone over at the RPF posted these beauty shots of the toys on some custom stands he built. I asked in another thread there if anyone who's seen the film could comment on the size of the tricorder; it seems in the film, it fits into the palm of Kirk's hand. So it sounds like the toy is close to the correct size. I heartily recommend them. :techman:

There was another thread there, a week or so back, which contained a video clip illustrating the various sounds/functions of the Playmates tricorder. I think you've seen it already, but some other folks here might be interested. (Scroll down to Post#15 for the clip.)

Hmmm, looking at those pics I have a sudden urge to go out and buy some chrome spraypaint...No David no...its just the fancy shmancy lights making it look better, it'll still look like sprayed plastic if i do it! :p

^I'm in the process of reworking my phasers by filling the seam lines and screw holes, sanding off the manufacturer's marking, etc, and I'm planning on repainting them with the spray can version of Thomas' Stainless Steel paint. My mom used the roll-on version on her appliances and it looks pretty good; certainly better than silver rattlecan spray paint.

Oh, yeah, I was all over that one.
