Tom Hanks has been promoting Larry Crowne, in theaters Friday, and on the BBC Show Breakfast News (via Bleeding Cool) a reporter asked the question, “Will there be a Toy Story 4?” Hanks response was very surprising:

I think there will be yeah. Yeah, yeah. They’re working on it now. There you go.

Toy Story 3 was the perfect, logical ending to the trilogy and series. We learned what happens to toys as their owner outgrows them and how they get passed along. If anything, the Hawaiian Vacation short in front of Cars 2 offered a peek into the remainder of the lives of Buzz, Woody, etc. But still, if Pixar has a compelling and worthwhile story to tell, audiences would surely line up to see the film. And Hanks would know before almost anyone. They record voices very early in the process, not to mention that Tim Allen has said he signed for a fourth movie. Is Hanks referring to simple paperwork or actual creative development? We’ll have to wait and see.

NOOOOOOO! Don't do it, Pixar! Toy Story 3 was the perfect ending for the series.

Why does it seem like Pixar has been infected with sequelitis? Do you think they will do a Toy Story 4? Would you watch it?

I would hope they call it a day, Toy Story is a rare event in move history, a prett much flawless trilogy of films with massive critical acclaim and the ending of number 3 was superb.

There was a time when Pixar didn't even want to do sequels, and then I guess, Disney happened. Toy Story 3 was perfect the was it was, giving us closure with Andy, but at the same time it did set up the possibility of a sequel with the girl. The writing was smart enough to go either way.

I loved 3 and I hope 4 will be just as fantastic best pixar series ever. here's hoping they add more new toys to the main cast. and what happened to bo peep in the third movie?

She got named dropped as havin' been sold off, or something, at a garage sale, kind of like in Toy Story 2...

I think the third had too many toys runnin' 'round, and definately too much merchandisin'. Really don't want a fourth, three is a nice, odd number.

I also thought it ended perfectly, but I was talking to someone about it and the said, wow it leaves it open for sequel, I was like "really?"

Yeah, I think the idea is that they had wanted Barbie, but Mattel said no, so they had Little Bo Peep instead (I remember the dispute from before Toy Story was released), and then Mattel probably reconsidered somewhere down the line after seeing how successful the movies were, she got dropped in favour of Barbie.

It does depending on how you look at it and it does it very effectively without hitting you over the head with it. Girl gets toys, which is a very effective way of passing the baton over to a new kid, should there be a sequel. In doing this, it ties things up and gives everyone closure on Andy. It doesn't say yes, and it doesn't say no, but it gives Pixar an opportunity to revisit the franchise by leaving the door open, should they choose to come back to it at some point in time.

Maybe in 10-15 years, but I don't believe that Pixar is working on a Toy Story sequel this soon. I think Tom Hanks is mistaken.

Flat no. TS3 had the perfect emotional weight and was an excellent way to end the story, and say "Good-bye". It'd be like making a sequel to Return of the Jedi, or 12 Monkeys- all the plot threads have been tied up; why continue?

I really hope this isn't true for all of the reasons people have already said (flawless trilogy, perfect ending). In addition to Hanks' comments, I read somewhere else (I don't remember the source so it could be rubbish) that Tim Allen has already signed a contract for a fourth film if they decided to make one.

That being said, I remember how restrained Hanks and Allen were initially about doing a third film. I believe the story goes that they (and John "The Pixar Lucky Charm" Ratzenberger) were shown a short clip of what would be done in Toy Story 3 and they decided to go with it. I like to think they won't do a fourth unless there's a very good story to be told.

Well, George decided on making nine films during Production of Empire so Return would've had a sequel ,dealing with the 'other' Yoda mentioned. Back before that character was retcon'd to be Leia.

But lucas dropped that idea because he and a bunch of other peole got sick of the films.

Maybe it's just the way I'm choosing to read it, but it sounds more like Tom Hanks was being sarcastic.
