As others have said it is all explained in the movie.

Though the idea that people take their toys to college is kind of silly. I didn't keep any toys, they always got passed down to my younger siblings and then sent to Goodwill or tossed. I have one stuffed animal I believe...and I didn't take it to college with me.

I actually had gotten a Buzz Lightyear as a gift when Toy Story came out (my Freshman year) and I took it to college. Why not?

I still have it and my daughter plays with it.

And make you cry too, if the handful of reviews so far are any indication.

I agree.

I actually got through it okay, although for some reason it deeply bothered me that so many characters didn't return.

Meh... I really didn't miss them.. One of the best movies I've seen this year, and I found the ending best described as bittersweet, rather than morbid or depressing. I do have a major qualm with the ending, but I will wait to discuss later.. It mirrors an opinion expressed by Harry Knowles in his review. If you wish to spoil the ending, here's the link..
