If you were going to have an "ending" to Star Trek back in its original run that ending should have been about something meaningful to the characters, not a retread/sequel to a previous episode. The story should have been about the characters experiencing something life changing while seeking out new life and new civilizations. A transformative moment for Spock ala TMP would have been perfect. You'd want a similarly transformative moment for Kirk.
