TOS references to past Starfleet events unexplored in canon

Ten years before TOS definitely puts us within the Captaincy of Christopher Pike! But will this be our universe or the recreated version of the JJ Abramsverse?
JB
Prime universe.

That said, there have been so many time travdl episodes / movies, every canon "violation" can be dismissed with "timeline change" .

I went to the Starfleet museum exhibition today, they had a "canon" prime universe timeline up that goes back to several of the discussions here

Tau Ceti is about 10 light years from Earth. Thats awfully close for Romulans to incur into Federation territory. Indeed that could have been quite a scary incident.

Then again Star Trek could toss around real references without really appreciating their import.

Very true and 10 light years is very close. Then again, I can't imagine that the RNZ would be THAT far from Terra to start with?

The Rom War was fought by low tech low warp ships on both sides (presumably with limited range too?) and so I can't imagine that Terran colonies had reached very far in the fifty odd years since Cochrane.

So maybe, Tau Ceti isn't too far an incursion to be reasonable?

All this gets murky. Garth's victory at Axanar might not be part of a "Four Years War" popularized in fanon given there is no "four years war" mentioned in all of TOS. Garth's victory could be something else entirely. The Axanar fan project is all based on very skimpy references in TOS and the rest is fan rationalizations, but many fans seem to have gotten the idea it's more substantial than that. It's not.

Although a massive fan of the FASA game I have never liked their "Four Years War" concept. And I am sure that (although I don't have a copy to hand) in "Errand of Mercy" there was some quote that Feds and Klingons had maintained a Cold War for years which had finally built up to the "EoM" War.

So I always saw Axanar and Donatu 5 etc as part of an uneasy cold war that occasionally heated up - but only as a one to one skirmish, never a full blown war!

Spock says he served with Pike for nine plus years. If we assume Spock isn't that long out of the Academy when he comes aboard the Enterprise then it does look like Pike commands the Enterprise until Kirk takes over.
In The Menagerie, as they are walking to Pike's quarters - Kirk specifically states he 'took command' of the Enterprise from Pike.
