I Spy was a true breakthrough moment in TV history. A black actor on equal billing with his white counterpart and the series lasted three seasons. That was as woke as 1965 could get.

Explicitly, right from the first episode.

The other show that was similarly progressive was Danger Man, though a UK production. Some unfortunate yellow and brown face, but excellent Black casting and, far rarer for the time, frequently starring women of competence and independence.

The ITC shows didn't have an issue with race as much. Department S was another great show and the head of the organization was a black man.

Entertainment now is not run by writers of quality or producers of style it's all by people with an agenda to push or a history that they don't like and must change to a degree that viewers today now see as laughable! :brickwall:

Everyone and every show has an agenda of some kind. Some are just more open about it and pick positive ones.

Trek was pushing "an agenda" eight years before I was even born. It'll be pushing it when I'm a senior citizen or even gone even if the franchise is no longer producing new series or movies.

It's agenda can be found in statements made by Roddenberry in places like the Making of Star Trek. I was just perusing it and found instances of Gene talking about "diversity"!!!!!!

Gene could be a dirty old man but he knew what his universe was supposed to be about. A shame so many of its fans don't.

Scenes like these are what makes the Kelvinverse more real Star Trek to me than the so called Prime timeline shows Discovery and SNW.

Also, although GR likes to take full responsibility for the diversity of the show, according to Inside Star Trek, Herb Solow indicates that CBS actually pushed for more diversity from Desilu productions. Studies in the 60s were showing that x number of minorities were watching TV (go figure) and they wanted their audience represented. That's why shows like Mission Impossible also feature female and minority characters. (He also indicates that the push to remove Number One in the first pilot wasn't about the character being female, but that they didn't like Majel Barett specifically in the role)

Honestly, I have little doubt that while even modern Trek writers tend to lean towards liberal, when people talk about Trek being too "woke," or having an agenda, it's probably for similar reasons. If a portion of your audience identify as being a part of the LBGTQ community, why wouldn't you have characters that reflect that dynamic?!? (This same argument can go for newer Disney productions or just about any major studio).

Regarding the original post concerning the photo; I did enjoy it as it was a nice callback. I kind of wish that the powers that be didn't kill prime Spock just because Nimoy passed, but since they went there, the reference to the original cast was well incorporated into the script.
