I'm just curious - whenever the ship gets broadsided, or starts shaking apart, does the pool water go flying everywhere?

There's probably a cover for it when it's not in use. Or maybe it gets drained.

Perhaps a specialized structural-integrity field that can be quickly/automatically erected - powerful enough to keep the water in place but not enough to slice any crewmembers in the pool at the wrong time?

If you mean Neanderthals, that's what we used to think, but more recent genetic and archaeological evidence indicates that modern Homo sapiens and Neanderthals coexisted and interbred for thousands of years. In fact, every non-African population of humans apparently has some Neanderthal DNA.

Hmm. Well, according to Alan Dean Foster, the Neanderthals inherited the universe. (see Glory Lane)

On a completely unrelated note, the lampshading of the "redshirt buys it" cliche reminded me of the "running onscreen body count" from the movie, Student Bodies (anybody remember it? I saw it once, on a neighbor's ONTV [andybody remember THAT?]).

Still at it. Although a novel team up, Seven's scenes just do not fit the TOS style or format. Replacing Spock with Seven's analyses is maybe a wash but Kirk trusts Spock over Seven.

Thanks! Needless to say, I was thrilled to get the news. This is the first time one of my Trek books has hit the NYT list since The Q Continuum trilogy.

I voted Outstanding.

I liked the appearance of all the familiar species, and to have a followup to some of the episodes. Actually, the part of having several smaller adventures on different locations was the major seller for me.

So, Nessie was found at last?

Concerning setting novels during the run of the 24th century novels, I'd be interested in that if they tie into the modern continuity. It would allow some backstory-like tales, like Allegiance in Exile did for DS9, or the combined present/flashback of Absent Enemies.

Just posted my review!

Really enjoyed it for the most part. One thing I neglected to mention in my review was Greg Cox's great use of the TOS tropes of redshirt deaths and the aggravating Federation official. Tired and overused generally, but still feeling really fresh when used here!

Don't wait to get them if you want them in on paper. By the time you are ready, they might not be available. With Star Trek, it's get it as soon as you see it if you want paper editions.

I enjoyed this novel. Very fast paced and a fun exploration of TOS worlds that I never really thought the novels would return to.

I gave it a bump up to Outstanding for the references to the Yesterday's Saga.
