TOS insignia

^That's a nice thought, at least where the starships are concerned. Not sure it goes for starbase commanders, since they all pretty much used the same starburst emblem, as I recall.

Is an insignia for each ship really practical in the 24th century? We don't know for sure how many ships Starfleet has but DS9 implied it is in the thousands. A lot of those insigias are going to look alike.

We have them now.
It's important for a ship's crew to come together as a crew, to have a sense of belonging to one another and to their ship.

Our Navy only has a few hundred ships and I suspect the insignia are larger, allowing more room for individualization. When I was in the Air Force, each unit had its own patch which could definitely number in the thousands but again, the logo was larger and more elaborate.

TOS insignia were small and pretty basic. Maybe its my lack of artistic imagination but I can't picture there being thousands of those with real distinction between them.

We know that other ships used the same delta as the Enterprise. Maybe it wasn't Kirk that led to Starfleet as a whole using it but rather someone else?
