TOS ERA SHIPS

REDBAZ

Hi All,

Was wondering if anyone would be interested in this. I'm doing an online Trek comic book based during TOS Prime, the first few pages of which can be found here. The idea is that a badly damaged Enterprise is caught between a Klingon task force and their ancient enemy the Hur'Q. Big battle ensues. Starfleet arrives late in the day with a task force of their own to rescue the Enterprise.

So what I'm looking for are TOS era Starfleet and Klingon ships to help diversify the ships beyond the usual Constellation and D7 classes, canon or noncanon. I'm not asking anyone to produce anything new but only to post a design of a ship they wouldn't mind being included in the battle. If you have an action based scene already rendered I can incorporate that into the battle.

To clarify, there is no money being made from this, it is an exercise for myself to get back to a publishable standard after a few years doing storyboards and commercial illustration.

All contributed designs will be credited to their creator with a link to their respective website. I'd also be happy to donate a page of artwork showcasing your ship to the donor as thanks at the end.

Look forward to your thoughts.

Cheers

If you read the contents of Starfleet Museum out loud and record it on a tape recorder, you can play it backwards and it'll give you the cure for cancer, the most reliable relationship advice ever, and the ultimate Star Trek episode script.

It's just that good.

Wow. Really spiffy artwork there. Thanks for sharing that. You should submit some samples to IDW (current publishers of ST comics in the US).

Look forward to seeing more of your stuff.

Masao, that is one awesome site, thank you so much! I'll definitely be wanting to use some of them in my strip.

And after seeing your Romulan War ships, I quite fancy exploring that era more....

Thanks Mysterion, I do intend to submit to IDW after I think I'm back up to speed. There are some areas I'm a bit rusty on still which I hope to have improved on by the end of this strip. I have a Terminator and Jericho strip after this to do as well which I'll be using to pimp around, just to show I can draw killer cyborgs and post apocalyptic Kansas towns as well as starships! :)

You forgot about cute little kittens parachuting from the skies. That's a new feature.

Two things...

(1) It's not a "Constellation-class" ship. It's "Constitution."

The "Constellation class" name was used, much later on, during TNG for Picard's first command, the Stargazer. It's a TMP-era kitbash with four nacelles , but built largely from TMP-era kit parts (two upper primary hull halves, two dorsals, four engine-pylon halves used as lay-on details, etc, etc).

(2) For TOS ships, I would recommend that a great place to start is with the Franz Joseph and FASA TOS-era designs (all of which were pretty darned good, I think... albeit they used a lot of "standard" parts so very little was unique).

There are tons of "fan blueprints" out there. As Masao said, he has a pretty good collection as well.

Just make sure to properly credit the originators of the designs, and everybody ought to be happy. :)

Hi Cary,

Thanks for pointing us to the FASA designs, will search them out, and for highlighting my typo! ;)

I've just gone through Vances excellent collection of TOS schematics here, and I think it pretty much covers every variation for Starfleet vessels, which is brilliant for what I wanted to do. Is Vance still an active member on here?

Are there any particular designs people would like to see?

cheers

REDBAZ that comic looks incredible so far!! You've probably have plenty of choice already, but feel free to use any of my TOS designs: here.

The Vintage Starships website has a huge collection of TOS (and pre-TOS) designs rendered in 3d from various sources (including FASA). It maybe of help to you. :)

I downgraded myself to a 'passive' member...at least while I get a whole schlew of other things done. :)

This directory - http://www.jaynz.info/images/Fed2265/ - will probably cover you for a little bit whilst I get other things done this week for the site. (Like, coding the fargin' gallery in the first place! *cry* )

Thanks everyone for some great reference material, I think Starfleet is covered. I'm wondering how many different classes of ship I can fit into a double page spread!

On the Klingon side, I was looking at the Enterprise era Birds of Prey, D5's and Raptors to diversify the D7s, and I was hoping to find something design-wise that would be different to the general D7 and BOP layouts. Up to now I don't think I have so if I come up with anything decent I'll post it here for feedback.

The next few pages I'm doing will introduce the HurQ ships, again will look forward to thoughts on them.

cheers
