TOS Era Federation Diplomatic Vessel

Patrickivan

Fleet Captain
Newbie
This is my take on a former Starfleet Heavy Cruiser modified into a Federation Diplomatic Vessel.

The Saucer section is 150 metres (492.13 feet) across, and 26 metres (8 decks) high not including the bridge. There are an unusual amount of view ports around the sauce to accommodate the comfort requirements of travelling dignitaries. Several recreational facilities, lounges, auditoriums, and a bowling alley. Crew quarters are equally luxurious making this ship more akin to a passenger Star Liner then a military Starship.

Further information regarding the rest of the ship is to follow.

I'm building this in sections. There's only a quarter of the ship here because there are further details I need to add. As for the secondary hull, I'm still not sure what direction I'm taking. I have a couple of ideas. One is based on the classic cylindrical hull and two nacelles, and the other may involve an engineering section directly astern with quad nacelles... We'll see.

I'm not even sure I want to stick with the design purpose that I created for this ship... There's more on my wordpress- not much though.

Regardless, this could be considered the Galaxy Class equivilant of the 23rd century...

Here's what I have so far.

I like the layered look. In the past I mentioned putting an Abbe class primary hull on a refit body, or on Jackill's Carver class, with the secondary hull upside down
http://www.jackill.com/Pages/MV-43_Sample_Page.htm

The Abbe has widely spaced impulse exhaust, so an aft torpedo bay of size could fit between them. Here, you might place a very large rear observation bay...

Here's a little update. Not much. Some window details. Colour. Some little odds and ends. Note the little people in the window on the last image... I thought it was a fun little detail. From the perspective in the last image, it makes it look like there are 3 levels on the rim, but there are only two.

Nothing against the bevel of the NX-01 and NX-2000 to change pace, but its nice to see the edge of the saucer slanted as in TOS TMP more often.

Here's an update on my TOS era ship. There's nothing unusual about the style really. It's based on the shapes of the Constitution Class. It's larger. It takes a little longer to get up to speed. But it has terrific shields!

Gee, it's been awhile... But here's a little update... This is a big ship for the era. A big reason why there are only a couple.

That's not a standard shuttle in there. It's a diplomatic shuttle. Significantly larger and much more comfortable for short hops.

Any thoughts on this lumbering beast?

The images are larger if you click on them on my wordpress.

I'd suggest moving the pylons forward a bit. Not the nacelles, those are fine where they are.

Also make the pylons a bit thinner, front to back. The nacelles look too well attached to me. :D They need more of the Matt Jefferies "floaty" look. Beyond that, I think it's good.

The thick neck and nacelle supports is more what Gene might have thought about in a non-three nacelle dreadnaught. I can get used to the simpler secondary hull.

The multi-layered primary hull would be nice to see with future refit era designs with wider saucers perhaps...

Thanks. I toyed with having the plyons a little more forward, but it reminded me too much of TMP's pylon location.

I think the thicker neck here was a nice compromise between the thin Constitution and the Excelsior classes.

We haven't really seen many stepped decked saucers, and I was wary of how unusual it was. If it would fit in or not. I even toyed with putting windows on the top of the saucer, but decided against it and just went with the tonnes of public spaces along the saucer rim.

A refit version might also be nice. The stepped decks add a lot to the size of a vessel without having to add that much detail, really.

I think the neck still looks too much akin to brick. Sorry, but when I look at it, that is what comes to mind.

I would play around with it. Try to blend it more with the two hulls. Give all sides of the neck more curves-they look too flat.

I would taper the front or back of the neck or both.

Otherwise, I think she is coming along fine.

I don't think I'd do a refit version. My idea was that the next largest ship to come would be the Excelsior Class. I don't like to shake up my universe too much ;)

I see what you're saying for sure, and agree completely. I just think I'm done with this ship. It's been a pain and I've got my odd angular hulled one to work on, plus I have a project I've been meaning to start and am really excited to share!

I was happy with the details and things I learned on this. And it was a fun build.

Yeah, I think I know what you mean. There are times when I just want to be done with a project and move on.
