TOS eps Ever referenced again?

HIj'Qa

Fleet Captain
Fleet Captain
I've been doing a little project; connecting episodes that seem to have contributed a story idea, character, overt/covert reference, or even throw-away line, to the novel, comic, game or other Star Trek item that built on it.

Surprisingly, for the amount of spin off stuff TOS has generated over 40 years, I can't connect these episodes with any further mention. Can anybody help me out?

TOS# 56 SPECTRE OF THE GUN [the Melkot
TOS# 58 THE PARADISE SYNDROME (Preserver planet Miramanee
TOS# 60 AND THE CHILDREN SHALL LEAD [Triacus children???
TOS# 61 SPOCK'S BRAIN [Sigma Draconis civilization
TOS# 62 IS THERE IN TRUTH NO BEAUTY? (Miranda Jones, Medusans, Ambassador Kollos
TOS# 67 PLATO'S STEPCHILDREN [Alexander, Sahndara system
TOS# 68 WINK OF AN EYE [Scalos
TOS# 70 LET THAT BE YOUR LAST BATTLEFIELD (Cheron, Ariannus)
TOS# 72 THE MARK OF GIDEON [Gideon
TOS# 75 THE WAY TO EDEN ( Dr Sevrin, Tiburon, Irina)
TOS# 30 CATSPAW [extragalactic alien creatures
TOS# 6 THE MAN TRAP [M-113 civilization, McCoy and Nancy and Robert Crater

TOS# 60 AND THE CHILDREN SHALL LEAD [Triacus children???

Greg Cox's Q-Continuum Trilogy gave the history of the entity that compelled the children, along with the entities from "Day of the Dove" and the fifth movie.

TOS# 62 IS THERE IN TRUTH NO BEAUTY? (Miranda Jones, Medusans, Ambassador Kollos

Medusans have been mentioned here and there; for instance, John Vornholt's A Time to Be Born/Die features a Medusan Starfleet officer who lived in a kind of mobile chamber so no-one would go insane seeing him, and I believe wound up becoming a Traveler with Wesley.

TOS# 75 THE WAY TO EDEN ( Dr Sevrin, Tiburon, Irina)

Tiburonians have popped up now and again, including on-screen in Deep Space Nine. One example off the top of my head, there's a Tiburonian bridge officer on the ship Picard commands in the TNG portion of the Gateways series, Doorways into Chaos.

Fictitiously yours, Trent Roman

TOS# 58 THE PARADISE SYNDROME (Preserver planet Miramanee

Well, the Preservers get mentioned all the time; there's a bizarre tendency to identify them with every unnamed ancient power in Trek history, whether there's any reason to draw a connection or not. As for Miramanee's planet specifically, I don't think it's been revisited, but there are plenty of other Trek planets you don't list that haven't. So I'm not sure if you're referring to the episode as a whole or to that specific aspect of it.

TOS# 67 PLATO'S STEPCHILDREN [Alexander, Sahndara system

I mentioned in Orion's Hounds that Alexander went on to become a Federation ambassador, particularly to species of small stature such as the Sti'ach.

TOS# 68 WINK OF AN EYE [Scalos

I made a passing reference to Scalos water in The Buried Age, as part of a metaphor to describe someone very fast and hyperactive. But that doesn't really count.

TOS# 70 LET THAT BE YOUR LAST BATTLEFIELD (Cheron, Ariannus)

Really, would anyone want to follow up on that? (Indeed, I'm surprised your list doesn't include "The Alternative Factor" -- I'm not aware of any attempts to follow up on it, and with good reason.)

TOS# 75 THE WAY TO EDEN ( Dr Sevrin, Tiburon, Irina)

In Ex Machina, I mention Chekov taking leave to try to work things out with Irina Galliulin (to explain his absence during the animated series). He wasn't successful, obviously.

Actually, either Bele or Lokai appeared in the first DC comics TNG mini-series. As far as I know, that's the first TOS character to cross into the TNG era.

TOS# 75 THE WAY TO EDEN ( Dr Sevrin, Tiburon, Irina)

Wasn't the original Chief Engineer on the Titan a Tiburonian? I remember a reference to the ears...yep, I just checked memory beta.

Oh yes, that's right. Bele did appear in issue 6 of that miniseries, though I could never quite figure out why. It was kind of a random inclusion, since the story didn't have any connection to LTBYLB.

And the first TOS character to cross into the TNG era was Leonard McCoy in "Encounter at Farpoint."

SNW 10 Spec Reborn revisits Lazarus!

Thanks for the various inputs everybody, knocks a few more off my list.

TOS# 58 THE PARADISE SYNDROME (Preserver planet Miramanee)
This was specifically referenced in my SCE novella Small World.

TOS# 75 THE WAY TO EDEN ( Dr Sevrin, Tiburon, Irina)
Crewman Torvin, one of the engineers on the U.S.S. Sagittarius in my Vanguard novel Reap the Whirlwind, is a Tiburonian.

i can't give the details, because i don't remember them or i missed them but i know david r. george made it a point to reference every single TOS and TAS episode and all the TOS moves in his Crucible trilogy.

Oh yes, that's right. Bele did appear in issue 6 of that miniseries, though I could never quite figure out why.

It was Bele miscoloured with Lokai's complexion, too. He was also rather tall - taller than he was when played by Frank Gorshin.

Bele to Picard: "Return to my shattered world... have no others of my race... no one to love... No I was meant to be here... [on Faltos]."

It's a little eerie to see this thread right now, as I was just on the verge of starting a thread here asking whether there were any TOS episodes which didn't have literary sequels...

Learning all of these nuggets related to obscure (N.B. this sometimes means "bad" ;)) TOS episodes is really cool, so thanks to everyone who's responded so far. :)

So we're down to :

TOS# 56 SPECTRE OF THE GUN [the Melkot

TOS# 61 SPOCK'S BRAIN [Sigma Draconis civilization

TOS# 68 WINK OF AN EYE [Scalos

TOS# 72 THE MARK OF GIDEON [Gideon

TOS# 30 CATSPAW [extragalactic alien creatures

TOS# 6 THE MAN TRAP [M-113 civilization, McCoy and Nancy and Robert Crater

Gideon and Man Trap surprise me, but the others, I can kinda see why. . .

TOS# 56 SPECTRE OF THE GUN [the Melkot
An early storyline in DC's Star Trek comic by Mike W. Barr had the Melkotians facing off against the Organians.

TOS# 75 THE WAY TO EDEN ( Dr Sevrin, Tiburon, Irina)
One of President Bacco's deputy chiefs of staff in Articles of the Federation was a Tiburonian woman named Xeldara Trask, though she resigned in May 2380 to be with her family. The councillor representing Tiburon to the Federation is Delleo Gnizbreg.

TOS# 75 THE WAY TO EDEN ( Dr Sevrin, Tiburon, Irina)
As you can tell, there have been quite a few Tiburonians in all of the different book series. They actually seem to be a fairly popular race for guest characters.

Probably because they're about the only classic-era Federation member that's not one of the obvious "big names", i.e. Vulcans, Andorians, and Tellarites.

IIRC, Miramanee's planet - certainly the Obelisk found thereon - was referenced in "Preserver" from Shatner's Mirror Universe trilogy.

unless i'm going completely mental, i believe Planet of Judgement the old Bantam novel references the Melkotians...

oh, no, it was the Organians...

^^Gee, it's starting to look like the Melkotians' special power is to get mistaken for other superadvanced species. :D
