TOS Enterprise WIP 2.0

abaldwin360

Lieutenant
Red Shirt
I started this back in February, my computer died before I could finish, now I have another computer and started where I left off.

Thought I'd show the progress on my textures...

I just realized after I rendered it some of the textures on the bottom of the saucer are misaligned, but it's an easy fix...

Got some work done on the secondary hull and neck today. I won't have time to work on it over the weekend much, but I'll pick back up on Monday...

Very nice. Yet another subtly "modernized" take on the old girl that does no violence to the original design.

I got some reccomendations here, but I don't want to sound like I'm being negative. I like a lot of this so far... so, take this in a positive spirit. :)

Tweak the color of the lettering. Solid black never looks quite right, so try something like R:16, G:16, B:32. It may seem like a subtle difference, but it really helps make the model look more 'real'.

Lower the impulse intake grills to be only slightly above the hull. They're not stand-out boxes. Right now the elevation detracts from the smooth look of the hull.

Similarly, soften the red a bit from absolute and mix some gull grey into the color. The red is too sharp as it is, making it look a little 'cartoony'. (This is most obvious on the markings near the impulse intakes... which are actually yellow, not red).

The linear accelerator should also be the same color as the impulse engines themselves. This will help break up the look of the primary hull as well.

In contrast to the red, use a less matte finish on the copper. Right now it's a bit too 'flat' and comes off a bit too much like plastic. The 'spike' on the dish should also be gun-silver, not copper.

Hope this helps, and look forward to seeing more.

I like the subtle hull plating that only shows up under the right lighting conditions, and up close. My only critique is the size of the plating being too small. But that was a peeve I had with TMP too.

Finished the warp nacelles today, I'm not sure if I'm happy with the paneling yet, but I can fix that easily.

The texture maps are finished, the lighting is more or less done, I just need to work on some material settings. She looks very "plastic" in full light.

Once I get that fixed, I'll do some high-res beauty renders and a few desktops...

Great job!!!!

This, along with the other TOS Enterprises that people are working on, is proof that the Grey Lady still has some legs on her.

Stunningly beautiful, abaldwin360. It looks like an active, manned, running machine.

Frankly, I think what I like about your take on the ship is your willingness to try what some other modelers would avoid for the sake of realism: stark contrasts. The bright yellow, fiery Bussards are fabulous here; these aren't twirly Christmas lights duct-taped to a ceiling fan, but open cauldrons of burning fuel! And you know, the bold, black, square registry numbers work very well indeed when the light sources are pinpointed and the rest of the ship is in dimmer ambient light -- something that was harder to simulate in the '60s.

Consider making a few "deep space" renderings where the ambient light is even dimmer or even non-existent, and just the pinpoint lights outline the vessel. I think you'll find you've created something very striking indeed.
