TOS Enterprise 3D model - update

Grrrr......

(moderators; please feel free to edit this to put that image link in the update there...thanks!)

First, I have a new little chunk of test animation...in fact, this one is a "two-fer" (in more ways than one).

I don't often chime in to Fan Art conversations because most of the time I haven't much more to say than "Wow! That ship looks great!" ... And while your ships in this video look great too, what struck me was the ending scene -- when the destroyer is exiting to the left, and the Enterprise is continuing onward... I'm not sure what effects you were employing, but that scene really made me feel how enormous space can be. As I said, it's just a feeling, but it was a really great feeling and not one I've felt in any other Star Trek production. It felt like awe and fear together. Whatever you did, I hope you manage to retain that in future edits. Thanks!

All of it looks great! Stunning!
Loved the animation.... especially with the ships pulling away from K-7. That looked like a classic TOS shot done for Star Trek remastered. And the parting shot with the Hathor breaking away from the Enterprise made me think of The Undiscovered Country.

Gorgeous stuff there! I can't really think of anything, technically, that would be wrong with those shots. :)

And the still with the Enterprise in orbit... another beautiful render.

Well done! :)

"And the parting shot with the Hathor breaking away from the Enterprise made me think of The Undiscovered Country."

Yep. That's where I borrowed it from :-) In fact, yes, that shot is a combination of Trouble with Tribbles and the end of Undiscovered Country.

Anyways, I've been adding even more subtle details over the course of the afternoon...been sitting here with those Smithsonian reference images and have tweaked a few more things out (some bump mapping and a bit more shading on the hull and nacelles, I missed the numbers under the pylons, etc)., as well as further refining the lights and setting up another animation test. Basically the next animation test is going to be an "extended" version of that second part of the animation I posted earlier (with Enterprise, Hathor and K-7)...includes the same camera movements, but I started it earlier to have the camera do a beauty shots around and past the side on the Enteprrise before it comes around front and heads up the middle of the two ships. The first animation tests were all 900 frames...this one is 1400 frames. If that all goes well, then tomorrow or Sunday I'll probably start working on tweaking out the textures and lights for the Galileo to be consistent with the new work and do some test animation with her as well.

In other words - she's getting there.

Alrighty...got another update...another new animation test. The textures and render settings have been refined a bit and this one has a couple of small surprises :-)

The camera gets a bit shaky in the first couple of seconds...I should have added another 100 frames or so when I backed up the animation in 6c to add the extra footage...and my little sound effect got ever so slighty off time when I was moving things around in compositing, however I think that over all it was a pretty successful animation and fx test. Still have LOTS to do, but I think I'm starting to get closer to the final look.

And before anyone asks, yes...I did the peacock myself. Call it a tribute to all the Trek fans who got screwed back in '68 when the show was cancelled on account of corporate-minded ignorance.

As always, lemme know what you think.
