TOS/ENT Daedalus Class Cutaway W.I.P.

Ok, So I've been really bored lately and need something to occupy my time. SO! I began work on a large and detailed cutaway of my take on the unseen Daedalus Class starship. I'm taking the basic design and merging it with the ENT era styling. A few things I'm working into the design/ am keeping in mind:

1. NO! Photonic Torpedoes! I hate them. Their stupid and completely pointless; My take on them is that they're more powerful then Triton-Class Spatial Torpedoes, but far less cost effective. So hence why the Romulan Warp was faught with "Atomic Weapons".

2. I want the Daedalus to be a soft merge between ENT and TOS, I'm not getting rid of the LCD style monitors or the Doors or Comm Panels, etc.

3. Basing most of my theories off current conjecture, Matt Jefferies described the Nacelles during the 60s as containing the "engines", because of the inherent radiation and danger involved.
Therefore my current sketches have the Warp Nacelles not only containing the Bussard Ramscoops and the Warp Coils, But also containing the Deuterium tanks and possibly even the Warp reactors themselves.

Since the Daedalus launched during the Romulan War, which took place between 2156-2160, its more then likely that the designers of the time wouldn't just drop the pattern of NX based designing.*(mostly conjecture)

Nice start. How big are you assumeing it to be? Looking at the model, there are about 16 decks total, but it's highly subjective depending on how you interpret the rows of 'windows.'

Well that sphere alone is 73ft in height, based on the 8ft decks and the 1ft spacer's between each deck(allowing for utility conduits and whatnot).

The final size should be just shy of or around 100 meters which is about accurate. If the history matches up, with the Daedalus being built as a cheap/ "cost-effective" space explorer, then it wouldnt be bigger then the NX.

Figuring it takes what? 18 months to complete one NX class starship, I figure it would take half the time for a Daedalus... which is kinda the point of the sphere... its added volume.

A sphere is the cheapest way to get the most volume, so that makes good sense. Plus it has no weakest point. I agree it could be a 'Victory ship' like in WWII, which took all of 4 (count them) days to build from the ground up. Of course, those were large unarmed cargo ships and not battleships.

How close to the model are you going to keep? I started on a few exterior views based off the model some time ago, and the model...is very crude to say the least, so there's plenty of wiggle room with the details.

I guess the model seen on Sisko's desk 'in universe' was something Jake made for his 5th grade history report or something, so it need not be followed with slavish detail, imo.

Well for the most part I'm going to use a base model... something i can cross reference while I'm doing the interior. Once I'm done with the interior I plan on doing a detailed exterior to match.

This is what I'm using right now--

Nothing too specific, but enough angles to get a pretty well idea.

^ Thanks.

Ok here's an UPDATE.
I've added a few Crew Quarters, Transporter Room, Phase Cannon Access Hatch and the Mess Hall. The Bridge is also completed.

The idea I have in mind is "Compact", this is the Green Car of Starships. She's small, but has a lot of volume, she's efficient and fast; Not to mention her teeth.

The current armament for my rendition is as follows:
3x Phase Modulated Energy Cannons(mounted on Retractable Turrets)
4x Spatial Torpedo Tubes
80x Triton-Class Spatial Torpedoes
1x VLS Cell (x8 Star Sparrow Ship-to-Ship Missiles)

The VLS system is based on the current Mk.41 Vertical Launch System used on US Navy sea vessels. The idea being, that a more powerful offensive weapon was needed to handle the Romulan Warbirds. The VLS Cell is contained in the rear "Secondary Hull" of the Daedalus.

I'm really liking this. Great job so far.

One question, though: why are the corridors shaped like TMP/TNG rather than ENT or TOS?

Hey Not a bad Cutaway. I do think that the style of the interior should be a mix of TOS and Enterprise. I see that alot of people like make the ship look like its from the "Enterprise" era, but er need a ship that is a transition from the NX-01 to the 1701. I am also working on a cutaway. I have photos of the real model that was made for the show. I will try to find them and post them.

Here is what I have done on it.

^ I got what you're saying and I do agree that there needs to be a bigger transition to TOS style ships... But I don't see the Daedalus as that transition. Being that it was (conjecturally) launched during 2156-2161 area, I don't see there being a huge difference between the NX and Daedalus.

I'm still working on what I want to do to make the Daedalus seem to bridge the NX-TOS era's. I just dont think one singular ship can make that big of a jump, you'd need two or maybe even three, spread over a couple decades.

Maybe I'll have a bigger project ahead of me then I thought.

I think that the Daedalus is such a different design..thats its a good ship to do the transition from Ent to TOS. I do also think that the interior would look more like the Ent, but I would update the doors and some of the colors.

Also her is a photo of the model used on DS9 and in the trek book. If you look it seems that it has alot of decks.. Hope this helps.

I would definitely say it's a transition from NX to TOS, but for me, seeing a top-down deck plan would be a much easier way to imagine the interior. I do have a question - is it verified she had 15 decks? If so, then she would have been the big-guns of her time. I'd like to see a size comparison between her and the NX class.

Nice... but is it realistic to have six-foot-wide corridors and turbolifts on a ship that only has the floor space of a garden apartment building? I'd think with volumetric space at such an absolute premium that you might not have any corridors at all and only ladders/stairs for moving from deck to deck.

Well Let me say this. When I work on a ship like the Daedalus. I like to start with reference material and then work backwards. I know that alot of people like to make what he or she would like to see. But that is where you run into problems. We do not have alot of reference information on the Daedalus, so I started with the photos of the model used on the show. (The photo of the model I posted) I am not 100% but the NX is 7 decks..Again I have to check.. So the Daedalus is about double the size... But you have to think about this. The Daedalus should be the warp 7 ship (Talked about in "Enterprise" Final) That means a longer distance from port..More supplies and crews...etc so you need a bigger ship.

P.S. Like the update of the ship.

While there is no direct evidence on-screen, it is strongly suggested that the Daedalus had a crew of about 200, which has made its way into the novels and fanon.

The NX is a bit of an oddity to say the least. It's huge, even compared to the TOS-E, and has a lot of wasted space inside, which is how it ended up with only 7 decks and so many big rooms (and only 80 crewmen). Looking at the cross-section there are at least 2 (or 3) half-decks in there.

I'm not a huge fan of the NX, but if you are using it, fine. Just realize that bridging it to the TOS-E will not be easy since they have almost nothing in common.

Ok, Ok, Ok. UPDATE:

New and improved, Daedalus!
I started over from the beginning, redesigning and reshaping. The current deck height is 7.5ft tall with a 1ft spacer in between each deck. A total of 12 decks (splitting the difference) this allows for an over larger size then my previous design.

I do plan on including many of the suggestions made, including the elimination of the Turbolifts, except for a Cargo Lift in the Secondary-Hull. Sticking rather to Ladder Networks and Stairwells.

I can also see some problems people might have with the Nacelle design, but I refuse to change it; In my mind its the only logical transition between ENT and TOS style Nacelles.

Anyway! I should have the Secondary-Hull half-way completed by the end of the night.

If the nacelle-pylons are connected to the tube between the spheroid and the aft body, where is there room for the conduit that would connect to the warp core?

^ the basic idea is a follows, but I'm not finished yet, I just through this together for you.

OH BOY!

Let's see if this works now? :wtf:

I dropped the above design, because it would've required redesigning every little tidbit of the interior, doors, computers, torpedoes, etc.
So I said F-It and took the original design and... once again reformated it.... NOW!

8ft tall decks, 12 Decks in the sphere Primary Hull section alone and 7 in the Secondary Hull. For a grand total of 14 Decks... I tried doing 15 and it just didnt look right. So whatever one deck difference then most source material aint bad.

So far I've added the Bridge, Transporter Room, Forward Armory(with Phase Cannon), Echo Communication Relay deployment tubes and the Aft Armory... :brickwall:

A WHOLE LOT LEFT! But I've happy with this design.

On a side note, does anyone have any suggestions for possible alternatives to Photobucket? Maybe something to display the images... Bigger? I know there are a few, one in particular but I cant seem to remember them.
