That was the tri-ladder pit though, which only needed to be as deep as the height of a person - the wider design of the ladder and tube would accomodate the trio climbing down, no problem there!

Just caught "Day of the Dove" on MeTV. There's a scene with that ladder behind Kirk. And they just came down the corridor from the triangular ladder.

Looking again at some of the set pics. I think that both the ladder way and the door next to it are sometimes covered with a wall plug. To change the look of the corridor.
