TOS BluRay Issues

TOS and the movie are the only things likely to get me to do BluRay.

No sooner had we replaced all our old VHS with DVD... BluRay comes along. So, I'll be skipping this format, in all likelihood, awaiting the next-gen. Probably digital files and media players/LAN players.

Glad to hear that the picture is excellent on these. I saw the HD-DVD when they came out, and it was shockingly nice.

Same problem. Got a relatively new Samsung player (two weeks old). I'm beginning to wonder if its a Samsung issue. I noticed it particularly on "Where No Man Has Gone Before." I have not watched too many episodes on the set, but I wondered if it had something to do with the "seamless branching" with the Starfleet Access stuff. I held off watching too much until my new HDTV got here. Unfortunately, the first one I received came with two giant cracks in the inner LCD screen. My new set arrives tomorrow. Hopefully this one will be better! :)

I have problems during "Where No Man Has Gone Before" with audio dropouts during the PiP interviews. I haven't watched all the episodes yet, so there may be other problems lurking on the discs. My player is a Panansonic DMP-BD30 with up-to-date firmware.
I updated my firmware yet again (version 2.9, available only from panasonic.jp), and the audio problem is gone.

No problems whatsoever on ps3 and I've seen half the episodes. It upscales nicely too. I see there are a few who fans here too. Some of toms upscale very nicely indeed

Sorry; but could you restate the 2nd and 3rd sentences? I don't know what you're trying to say.

Thanks,
Doug

I had a lot of problems with a stand-alone blu-ray player (Sony), so I got tired of it and bought a PS3. What a difference! Better sound, better picture, and a hell of a lot faster regarding the loading time (about 20-30 times!).
And the best thing : besides watching blu-ray movies, you can do a lot of other stuff with it, including of course the games.
To anyone who wants to buy a blu-ray player : don't buy a standalone, buy a PS3 and I assure you, you won't regret it.
BTW, I have TOS season 1 on blu-ray and every episode played fine!

Ended up buying a PS3 with TOS Season 1 in Blu Ray - all good so far. Picture quality is just stunning for something made so long ago. TOS will never look better than this, unless someone knows how to make holograms!

Still not convinced on the CGI, but it can always be switched off on the Blu Ray editions.

One thing though - those command uniforms have never looked so green! In some shots the syandard command uniform looks as green as the wrap-around shirt. Maybe the settings need tweaking on my TV or something?

Huh? They look fine on my set; yellow-goldish, not green at all...
Like you said, you probably need to do some tweaking...

I was noting that there were a few Dr Who fans on the boards, and reported that the DVDs upscale well on a PS3 (better than TNG which is disappointing in it's upscaling)

Got it. Thanks. Now, to really show my ignorance, I'll ask: What are "toms"?

Doug

In all honesty, the PS3 is probably one of the best disc players to ever come out. Even if I wasn't playing games on it, it's definately worth the price for getting the player - the Trek Movies all look fantastic on it (though I long for the Director's Cuts of I and II now), and Sony has been extremely good about firmware updates.

I have four games (one came with it) for my PS3. I've played three of the four games a total of 7 individual times in the nearly 12 months I've had it. I've watched about 130 titles (about 70 on Blu-ray) with it. If I never play another game on it again (a distinct possibility), it will still be the best single piece of equipment in my home cinema (apart from the speakers). I recommend it to just about everyone I've had ask me about a Blu-ray player.

Tweaked, but still - everything is so green! Sickbay walls, command shirts, lighting on various shots... Never noticed it on VHS, TV or DVD, but the greens really show up on Blu Ray. Not a huge issue, but a very noticeable difference compared to other editions (for my eyes anyway!) :)

New firmware update for Samsung players released. I think it solved the repeat problem.
