TOS Blu-Ray: Airdate or Production Order or something else...?

My wife is not into TOS, she likes some Next Gen and some Voyager and a bit of Enterprise. She has seen most of the TOS movies but she pretty much has forgotten them except she knows that she likes the one with the whales. She has seen the commercials and trailers for the new movie and she wants to see that movie NOW. Harry Potter? Who cares, Terminator...T-What? Generic Chic flick movie opening this week...don't care...Star Trek....WANT TO WATCH NOW.

I figure this is the perfect time to try and get her hooked on TOS, I just grabbed it on Blu-Ray and i want to knock her out with a killer episode.

Should I go with the Airdate and show her Man Trap?, or go with production order and go with Where No Man Has Gone Before and try to explain all the differences. Maybe i should go with Space Seed since she does know who Khan is. Or i could show Menagerie 1 and 2 to get her up to speed with Captain Pike but then i have to explain the history again. Or should i go with a tearjerker like City on the Edge of Forever or a classic like Devil in the Dark....I am lost here.

I want to get her into it but first impressions are important. Should i go for a standalone purist approach and go Airdate or should i try and grab her attention with either a standalone or an ep that has links to the movies?

Airdate order is whacked. Go with production order. Ideally start with The Cage but as that isn't out yet, it may be a bit problematic :/

Production order for sure. You can appreciate how things developed as they were filming. The Cage? If you can get even an older copy of The Cage, show her that and THEN the remastered WNMHGB. After that, continue with production order.

Thanks for the input. I ended up showing her WNMHGB first. I had to do some explaining because she noticed that i was not starting from the first episode on the disc and she was adamant that we start from the beginning or not at all. I had to explain that we were starting from the beginning...sort of.

Personally, if I was trying to get someone hooked on TOS, I would just start with the BEST episodes. City, Space Seed, Doomsday, etc. It's not like there's a larger storyline that you have to follow from beginning to end, after all.

I agree with you. However she wanted to start from the beginning. I tried explaining that each episode was standalone but she would have none of that. She wanted to watch from the beginning or not at all. It took a lot of convincing to get her to start with WNMHGB instead of The Man Trap. The best thing is that she wanted to watch more trek tonight.

I'm watching my set of TOS-R DVD's and the series is more interesting and progresses logically when viewed in production order.

It's just plain 'ol more fun too.

I watch them in "mood" order. As in "what episode am I in the mood for now?"
