Sorry but its happening in the Doctor Who universe so therefore cant have just Torchwood without the Doctor when its about Earth almost getting wiped out.

This is why i always felt Torchwood should of been its own show outside of Dr Who.

But then you're missing the point of Torchwood itself. Harriet Jones made the point that Earth needed to defend itself when the Doctor wasn't there. They needed to stand on their own two feet, not cry and call for help whenever it all goes tits up.

Fuck that! It woukd have been a real cop out if The Doctor used his Deus Ex Machina presence. Imagine the USS Enterprise E getting rid of the Jem'Hadar and blowing up the Caves of Fire in What You Leave Behind. And TNG is the parent show.
As I said, fuck that!

Snick27 you obviously missed the whole point of the series so stick to Doc Who which plots are fun but come on full of plot holes too. No Doctor or Martha in this because its bloody TORCHWOOD.

That's exactly what the show is trying to be.

Funny, isn't it? For years people have moaned about TW being too light; too 'gay'; too fluffy; Trying too hard to be the 'adult' Doctor Who.

But when TW delivers 5 nights of top quality drama which make you think about the world we live in while pulling no punches, its "WAHHHHHH!!! TOO DARK! WHERE WAS THE DOCTOR?!??"

Why do you think CoE was moved to 9pm, instead of an early Saturday night, tea-time slot?

The 456 aren't the real monsters. The real monsters are us. If that's too dark for you then I suggest you stick to Doctor Who.

Completely agree. Children of Earth came close to wiping the floor with anything the new DW has done yet, and I say that as a big fan of the parent show and a Torchwood basher.
It would have ruined this series; absolutely shot, dismembered and buried any sense of jeopardy, realism, or good drama, by having the Doctor appear to save the day. Torchwood was, in its final hours, doing exactly what it had been created to do - save the Earth from devastating alien threat when the Doctor wasn't there. And frankly, anything where Martha Jones does not appear is a plus for me as well. The acting stepped up significantly by every cast member in CoE - do you really think Agyeman has the chops to catch up?
If the Doctor had showed up, it would have been the biggest cop out in the history of poor writing. And the ending was absolutely perfect given the setup. If that setup had dissolved into a happy happy, cherry on top ending I would have lost every last bit of faith I had in the DW/TW team to produce serious drama.

A-fucking-men

And screw the haters who didn't get it. Children of Earth was nothing short of brilliant, I don't care what anybody says.

Quite apart from any other concerns, it was a blessing to not have UNIT and the government fapping furiously over the Doctor and basically letting him do whatever he wanted. That 'bit' they always do where the episode's UNIT representative snaps to attention and salutes the Doctor? Beginning to get irritating. It was a relief to have a show where the heroes had to genuinely fight their cause and not get treated as royalty or the Messiah.

Showing Earth dealing with Who's monsters by itself is kind of the whole point of Torchwood, though, from its first big reveal in Who, as said by Harriet Jones, is that the Doctor isn't always there when Earth is almost getting wiped out. They don't have the luxury of elegant peacefull solutions from a few waves of the Doctor's magic wand, they never know when he will be there or not.

Agreed, but I think it would have still ever so slightly cheapened Torchwood's finest hour.
Agreed, because the Doctor would not have condoned Jack running away, and would have insisted he face up to it all,a dn run around ina Doctorish manner trying to fix it.

To repeat, for those who don't get it, imagine the others offscreeen are BUSY TRYING TO HELP IN OTHER WAYS besides getting under Torchwood's feet.

Once you get that... the rest is easy.

Well, to be fair, the last time UNIT showed up in Doctor Who, they did salute and hero-worship him, but they also were determined to kill him by closing the rift and leaving him and the others to be eaten by those monsters in "Planet of the Dead".

A lot of people think of the Doctor as Earth's protector and saviour, but that's not what he is. He's just an adventurer who turns up by chance and then helps.

To be honest, I think that was such a poignant and dignified ending point for Torchwood that I'd be happy if they quit while they're ahead.

Still, I wouldn't say no to seeing Gwen, Rhys, PC Andy (the constable who'd never say "nigger") and Jack again.

Agreed, on both points.

The Doctor did run away from Gallifrey and even Jack himself, he admitted to running away from Jack in Utopia.

People say Torchwood has gotten as dark (or darker) than NuBSG, but at least "CoE" has not been as consistently nihilistic as The Outer Limits which had terrible endings to episodes like "The Deprogrammers" and "Trial by Fire" (spoilers for both clips).

Depressing or what?
