Top Three Stories from Each Doctor

Attack of the Cybermen's main criticism I think is that it uses way too much of continuity. You've got callbacks to previous Cybermen stories like the Tombs, the controller (even played by the same actor but having gained a lot of weight in the decades since!) and them lurking in the sewers (Not to mention the plot involving both their home planets), not to mention Lytton from the previous season, the Chameleon circuit subplot and the Doctor visiting the junkyard where it all started (Although in an 80's incarnation.)

Revelation of the Daleks IMO is well-directed but it is kind of silly with the DJ, the strange romance and stuff. Still it allows Terry Molley's Davros some range apart from his other two TV stories (a range that Big Finish has used well) as the "Great healer". Also the bounty hunter guy was kind of cool.

Has there ever been a Big Finish audio that linked Revelation and Rememberance? The story of how Davros went from being the Dalek's prisoner to being the leader of the Imperial faction (Who have a similar design to the Necros Daleks) causing the originals led by the Supreme Dalek to flee and become the Renegades etc.

I think a lot of the love Varos gets is because it's really the only season 22 story that doesn't really feature any references to the past or old villains-it feels original.

I know I personally love it, its my favorite 6th Doctor story (and he's tied as my favorite classic Doctor with the 2nd). Then again, I don't dislike The Twin Dilemma, so my taste in 6th Doctor stories may be suspect
Really? I can't accept this is true.

Well, my most hated Sixth Doctor story is probably Mindwarp, with a dishonorable mention to Revelation of the Daleks. While The Twin Dilemma wasn't great, I didn't hate it. It had a few interesting scenes, and even at the time I first saw it I had seen worst Doctor Who stories.

When it comes to Attack of the Cybermen, I don't know what to say. I enjoy the story, the characters, and it has some cool moments. Actually, when it comes to Sixth Doctor stories, I'm not a huge fan of Vengeance on Varos. Its not really bad, but I HATE Sil, and I didn't find the premise of the plant very interesting.
Attack of the Cybermen is my favorite 6th Doctor story. i'm not overly fond of that era at all. in fact Attack is the only 6th Doctor story i like. The Two Doctors is decent i suppose.

audiobooks...now thats a whole other story.

Am I the only one that absolutely loved Invasion of Time, Pirate Planet, and Stones of Blood?!?! Those are the ultimate classic Tom Baker stories! :p

I still laugh every time Tom Baker solemnly produces a lawyer's white wig from his coat and puts it on

I actually love all of Invasion of Time as a whole (Well, Krull is pretty bad, but, I've become numb to it's awfulness, and just accept it as part of the Series)

The Kroll theme song is the catchiest tune in the world though! It's get stuck in your head for days!

dun dun dun dun KROLL!
dun dun dun dun KROLL!

Kroll is definitely the weakest of the Key to Time season, but it still has good stuff.

My parents (bless them) named me after a Doctor Who character, but although I really liked Eccleston I never really got into the show until Tennant's last episodes. Then I decided to watch them all from the beginning. :rommie:

Almost five years later, I'm still only up to Tom Baker. (What? It's a lot of episodes!) My deepest respect to those who've also made it through all of the audios; I really want to do that too but assembling an achievable list is difficult. (I'd like to hit all of the audios where a Doctor reprises his role, but even with that limitation there are just so many.)

First Doctor

My Doctor. A lot of people can't get past Hartnell's hostility in the first episode, but really, Hartnell played every likable characteristic of the Doctor during his tenure.

Unearthly Child (On the strength of the first episode alone.)
Time Meddler
The Myth Makers

Second Doctor

Troughton was one of the few that didn't impress me in his first serials. Thank goodness I stuck with him, because I got to like him a lot, particularly his deep friendship with Jamie and Zoe. (Also the names of two of my siblings. Seriously, Mom, Dad, what is the deal?)

The modern Who in particular rarely seems content to let the companions just be friends with the Doctor, so it's nice to see here.

Web of Fear
The Mind Robber
The War Games
(I could not stop watching this one until I got to the end. I can't imagine the surprise and suspense during the original broadcast.)

Third Doctor

I liked Pertwee right away. Loved all of the attempts at action and stunts (achieved with varying degrees of success) and the rest of the cast was the best lineup before or since. The Brigadier, Jo Grant, Benton, the Master, Sarah Jane... Amazing. (Also, the Third and Second Doctors make the best Doctor pairing. I didn't want Troughton to leave after The Three Doctors!)

The Silurians
Carnival of Monsters
The Time Warrior

Fourth Doctor

I really didn't see what the big deal was about Tom Baker at first. It took awhile, but oh man, am I hooked now. People say that he's the definitive Doctor, as though everyone before him had never got the character quite right.

They're selling Baker short, though, because all of the previous Doctors knocked it out of the park. If Baker is better than them, it's just because he's that damn good.

(Still haven't finished Baker's run. I see that several other people have listed stories I haven't seen yet as favorites--good to know there's something to look forward to!)

Masque of Mandragora
The Face of Evil
Robots of Death

I've seen two of the Fifth Doctor serials during 50th events. (Earthshock and Resurrection of the Daleks). Davison just didn't appeal to me. Still more than willing to give him a shot.

I also caught Colin Baker's Attack of the Cybermen, and I liked him right away. I love seeing the Doctor's arrogance running rampant. I can see where he might be off-putting, specially when he was the standing Doctor. But as one out of twelve/thirteen, he's a great change of pace.

I've only seen The Curse of Fenric from the Seventh Doctor...wasn't crazy about the story, but I'm looking forward to more Sylvester McCoy.

I think Night of the Doctor deserves a special mention, even though the Eighth Doctor wasn't even in more than two live action "episodes". I would put it in the top twelve best Doctor Who episodes, full stop. It doesn't stand on its own the way other stories do, but never has so much series mythology been used so well in such a short period of time.

(Again, kudos to everyone who was able to list the audios.)

Ninth Doctor

The Ninth Doctor was my first chance to actually see an episode of Doctor Who after hearing about it my entire life. I was just starting to get into it when he regenerated and they lost me.

Rose
Dalek
Father's Day
(The first episode I actually liked; I didn't really "get" the show back then.)

Tenth Doctor

This was when Doctor Who suddenly went from something I'd have to explain to everyone I met to something they knew and cared more about than I did. I've seen plenty of Tennant episodes now, but still haven't given him the attention everyone feels he deserves. I do quite like him, though.

(Let me know if there are better episodes than these.)

Blink
The Fires of Pompeii
The End of Time

Eleventh Doctor

I liked Matt Smith from the get-go. He seems to be the youngest and oldest of the new Doctors all at the same time, and that never fails to win me over.

Vincent and the Doctor
Asylum of the Daleks
The Day of the Doctor

Twelfth Doctor

Obviously it's far too soon to call this one. However, I have the feeling that when all is said and done, Robot of Sherwood will make the list. (That's another one that I would easily place in the top twelve.)

I would also recommend the two Cushing movies (dated though they may be, they're rather impressive compared to the television show at the time) and many of the special features on the Classic DVDs.

There's a two-part documentary in the form of a story set on future Earth, a "sequel" of sorts to The Green Death, a quest for one of the most obscure Classic Who writers, and a nice feature on Who videotape trading in the early days of the format. Great stuff.

So...what's the most affordable way to start in on these audio dramas?

Only really started watching Classic Who last year, and it was this year I attacked it with vengeance. 4, 5 and 7 suffer the most, as barely watched any of them yet. I avoided the Multi-Doctors where I could, but The Two Doctors just couldn't be.

Day Of The Doctor

First:
100,000 BC (ie. An Unearthly Child onward)
The Daleks
The Dalek Invasion of Earth.
The Daleks have been grossly overused in new Who but back in the day they were almost always enjoyable on some level or other.

Second:
Tomb of the Cybermen. Who (of any era) has very rarely been better than this.
The War Games
The Invasion
and two or three others. The more I've seen of Troughton's Doctor, the more I've liked him.

Third: My Doctor. This is where it gets difficult.
Ambassadors of Death
Inferno
The Silurians

and four or five others at least. Pertwee ruled.

Fourth: Major non-fan of Baker's Doctor but several of my favourite serials are from this era (go figure).
Genesis of the Daleks - possibly the single greatest Who story, of any era.
Pyramids of Mars
Robots of Death
and three or four others at least.

Fifth:
Caves of Androzani
Black Orchid
Frontios

and one or two others.

Sixth, Seventh: None. I barely remember Baker's era and I disliked McCoy's Doctor too much to watch more than a handful of stories.

Eighth: None. Didn't like the movie. At all. Never gotten into the audio stuff.

Ninth:
Dalek
Rose
. I liked her when she was a person, as opposed to the simpering idiot she became.
no third

Tenth:
Blink. The fact he was hardly in it helped enormously, but the sheer brilliance of Blink makes up for pretty much anything. Even Tennant. Well, almost.

Eleventh:
The Eleventh Hour
The Pandorica Opens / The Big Bang
The Girl Who Waited

and three or four others. Smith's Doctor was a joy. I miss him.

Twelfth:
Listen.

Of the multi-Doctor stories, The Three Doctors is by far my favourite ("So, you're my replacements, eh? A dandy and a clown."). The Five Doctors was also enjoyable, but not even Troughton and the incomparable Jacqueline Pearce could make The Two Doctors watchable. But as in all things, to each their own.

Including TV and audio (I've not read enough of the books), without having seen every story of every Doctor, and in no particular order;

First
The Daleks
The Aztecs
The Romans

Second
The Mind Robber
The Invasion
The War Games

Third
Spearhead From Space
Day of the Daleks
The Green Death

Fourth
Genesis of the Daleks
The Talons of Weng-Chiang
City of Death

Fifth
Spare Parts
Mawdryn Undead
The Caves of Androzani

Sixth
The Mark of the Rani
Jubilee
The Mysterious Planet

Seventh
Remembrance of the Daleks
Ghost Light
The Curse of Fenric

Eighth
The Chimes of Midnight
Neverland
The Night of the Doctor

Ninth
The Unquiet Dead
Dalek
The Empty Child/The Doctor Dances

Tenth
Human Nature/The Family of Blood
Blink
The Waters of Mars

Eleventh
The Eleventh Hour
Vincent and the Doctor
The Doctor's Wife

Twelfth

I'm still in the process of watching all of Classic Who, so I can only reference what I've actually seen thus far (which is about a third of it):

First Doctor:
The Romans
The Time Meddler
The War Machines

Second Doctor:
Tomb of the Cybermen
The Mind Robber
War Games

Third Doctor:
Terror of the Autons
Inferno
The Green Death

Fourth Doctor:
Genesis of the Daleks (safe choice, but it is damn good)
Talons of Weng-Chiang
Brain of Morbius

Fifth Doctor (this was tough):
Arc of Infinity
Caves of Androzani
Kinda

Sixth Doctor:

Vengeance on Varos
Terror of the Vervoids

Remembrance of the Daleks

Ninth Doctor:
Dalek
Empty Child/Doctor Dances

Tenth Doctor:

Eleventh Doctor (tough cos I like the whole River arc):
The Impossible Astronaut
Let's Kill Hitler
Time of the Doctor

Twelfth Doctor:
Mummy on the Orient Express
Flatline
Death In Heaven

This list is subject to change, since it favourites can depend on all kinds of things...

1st Doctor; An Unearthly Child (episode one only), The Romans, The Reign of Terror

2nd Doctor; The Enemy of the World, The Web of Fear, The Seeds of Death

3rd Doctor; Spearhead from Space, The Mind of Evil, The Ambassadors of Death

4th Doctor; The Talons of Weng-Chiang, Terror of the Zygons, The Robots of Death (ergh, and so many others from seasons 12-14)

5th Doctor; The Caves of Androzani, The Awakening, The Visitation

6th Doctor; Mysterious Planet, The Mark of the Rani, Vengeance on Varos

7th Doctor; The Curse of Fenric, The Greatest Show in the Galaxy, Remembrance of the Daleks

8th Doctor; Night of the Doctor, The Chimes of Midnight, Invaders from Mars (BF need to be added here or there's nothing to choose from)

9th Doctor; The Day of the Doctor

10th Doctor; The Empty Child, Boom Town, The Long Game

11th Doctor; School Reunion, The Waters of Mars, Last of the Time Lords (all three parts)

12th Doctor; The Impossible Astronaut (both parts),The Name of the Doctor, The Rings of Akhaten

13th Doctor; Too soon to tell.

Now that I've watched every Season 8 episode at least twice, I've got a tentative initial list for Capaldi:

1. "Listen." This is one of the few episodes that genuinely gives me chills. It's creepy without ever being horrifying. Clara gives a strong emotional anchor to the episode. Her initial flirtations with Danny are quite genuine and interesting. (Although, Danny became much less likable after this.) And I really like Clara's speech to the young Doctor at the end, repeating the speech that Capaldi gave to Rupert earlier in the episode.

2. "Flatline." Clara just owns it in this episode. The Doctor has some funny lines. The whole tiny TARDIS thing is hilarious. And then, at the very end, the Doctor has one of his best badass moments of the entire series: "I name you the Boneless!"

3. "Time Heist." Damn, this is just a fun romp! And I'm really hoping that Psy comes back at some point.

Honorable mentions: "The Caretaker" & "Mummy on the Orient Express."

And for an extra bonus, my 3 favorite Capaldi moments of the season:
1. The whole restaurant scene from "Deep Breath."
2. The Doctor & Robin Hood bickering in the dungeon in "Robot of Sherwood."
3. That brilliant, manic, bug-eyed look as the Doctor exclaims, "Trees!" while explaining everything to the kids at the end of "In the Forest of the Night."

I would be lying, to rank William Hartnell & Patrick Troughton- PBS never aired their shows, and "Tomb of the Cybermen I fell asleep watching on Netflix!

3rd Doctor: "Ambassadors of Death", " Claws of Axos", "The Silurians" (what a great era)

4th Doctor: "The Sunmakers", " The Pirate Planet", "Genesis of the Daleks" (most of my favorites are in Tom Bakers 7 years!)

5th Doctor: "Caves of Androzani" "Warriors of the Deep". I haven't seen Peter Davison in 20 years. The only other moment that really sticks out is Adric dies!

6th Doctor: " Vengeance on Varos", "Revelation of the Daleks", " The Two Doctors" (love his era; JNT went berzerk with his vision)

7th Doctor:- Would like to see them with Fresh eyes, and perspective of time- this era is just embarrassing for the most part to watch for me

8th Doctor- can't really rank him, honestly.

I love Classic Who for its low budget 70's/80's feel. Love Tom/Colin Baker, Jon Pertwee...

My picks for the Twelfth Doctor, as of 2014:

Time Heist
Mummy on the Orient Express
Flatline

I really wanted to put Listen here, but I still bloody hate the frickin's barn scene with the First Doctor-as-a-child scene. So, so, so lame and pathetic. Now, if that were the Master, shortly after looking into the schizm, with Clara thinking its the Doctor, that would've been masterful and would've elevated the episode considerably, at least in my opinion.

I didn't care for Invasion of Time, loved The Pirate Planet, and thought Stones of Blood was good. I just finished the Key to Time season and really enjoyed all of the stories, except for The Power of Kroll which was not good. My only real complaint about the Key to Time storyline is that until The Armageddon Factor, it's really only a recurring storyline in the loosest of terms.

I've watched a LOT of Classic Who over the past year. Some Doctors stories more than others so I can't make a complete list. I'd like to watch more of the first three Doctors before I do that. I would put the original Daleks story on the First Doctor's Top Three though.

In regards to the Second Doctor, I'm not a great fan of Tomb of the Cybermen. I think the story is slow and there are more logic gaps than usual throughout (seriously, the Cybermen designed a cell that locks from the outside, keeping them inside until someone opens it? Really?). Though it does have that wonderful scene where the Doctor talks to Victoria about how he remembers his own family.

I watched a lot of the 4th, 5th, and 7th Doctor so my list for them...

4th Doctor

1) Genesis of the Daleks
2) The Deadly Assassin
3) Horror at Fang Rock

5th Doctor

1) The Caves of Androzani
2) Enlightenment
3) Either The Five Doctors or Earthshock

7th Doctor

1) Remembrance of the Daleks
2) The Curse of Fenric
3) Either Battlefield or Survival

I have a lot of favorites from the 9th and 10th Doctor era so I'll have to sort that out at a later date. For the 11th Doctor I'd put Day of the Doctor, The Doctor's Wife, Vincent and the Doctor and probably The Eleventh Hour (I haven't watched that one in a while but been meaning too).
