Top Gear to have a new presenter

Well, Doctor Who could at least employ researchers who know something about America when they set scenes here.

Never mind - I guess then American TV writers would have to give a fuck about what the rest of the world is like, in return.

Yeah....good luck with that. ;)

I'll give it a shot, but so far the new host lineup isn't doing anything for me. LeBlanc especially. He wasn't that impressive hosting the recent Top Gear special and when he was a guest in the past he didn't exactly bring charisma to the table.

Yeah, I read a description elsewhere saying that he looked bored, and I think it nailed it. He didn't bring anything special. As you say, not very charismatic. If he loves cars, he certainly isn't showing it. I'd rather see someone like Steve Coogan, if it has to be someone recognizable. Word is he likes cars and if anyone's seen The Trip, he was hilarious in that, with plenty of charisma. I could just picture him during the roadtrip portions of the show.

Oh how the tables have turned:

Actually I am rather pleased to have Matt LeBlanc on British Top Gear.

The rumour mill is that Eddie Jordan will be the third (core presenter) wheel joining this Robin Reliant.

Maybe they'll keep the same one? I don't really see much point in changing him if the current one still wants to do it, which would currently be the 3rd one, second one in white. But I suppose they could if they really wanted a fresh start. Guess it depends on the contract?

So BBC has just announced their presenter lineup for Top Gear. They're racing driver Sabine Schmitz, YouTube star Chris Harris, F1 pundit Eddie Jordan and motoring journalist Rory Reid, Chris Evans and actor Matt LeBlanc. Together with the Stig, that makes a whopping seven presenters. I guess BBC is now throwing presenters at the screen and see who sticks.

Yeah, Top Gear's done.

I didn't watch for the car expertise, I watched because three mates arsed about with explosives and took the piss out of each other.

Fifty quid says the Amazon show opens with a massive stunt that involves taking the piss out of the BBC.

That's an odd lineup. It seems a bit... many. At this point, the show's going to look a bit more like Fifth Gear with a number of hosts, which was TG's main competitor while the new Amazon show would be more like the Top Gear we know.

But then it makes sense to give us something different rather than trying to emulate the Top Gear of Clarkson/May/Hammond? I have a sneaking suspicion as well that all seven won't get equal screen time--I mean you can take the Stig out of the equation first of all, can't really call him a presenter. I can see Jordan and the YouTube guy being used sparingly, one report/article per episode, maybe Reid the same. leaving Evans, Schmitz and Le Blanc being the core presenting team.

I don't think it's going to be anywhere near as popular as the last iteration, but I don't think it's going to tank, I think it'll be successful, just modestly so. By the same token I have a hunch the Amazon show won't be anywhere near as successful as Amazon imagine.

Feel free to save this post and quote me when Nu Top Gear's cancelled after 3 episodes and the Amazon show runs for ten years ;)

Well, if there's one thing, Amazon Video isn't available worldwide, so unless something changes in terms of distribution that allows it to be seen where Amazon Video isn't available, then it's not going to have quite the reach that BBC and Top Gear has, so Top Gear does have that advantage out the gate.

The BBC strategy is to try and outnumber the boys? You're going to need more than that Beebs...

It's something different but not a good something different. Not an interesting line up. I thought Evans was going to go for another big name which may have made it interesting. Having 7 presenters gives it too much of a car news show feel or a formula 1 presenters line up.

No doubt the format gets retooled once or twice after the ratings tank and they have to cattle-prod people into the studio.

I have BBCA, so if this gets broadcast there, I'll watch it a couple times (like I did with TG US), but I don't have any expectations.

Fortunately, my Amazon Prime subscription is warmed up and ready to go.

I will give this a chance, because I really really love Chris Harris and Sabine Schmitz. Both of them are excellent drivers, and really entertaining presenters. If you haven't watched any of the "Chris Harris on Cars" videos on youtube, you are missing out on a really well done program. Honestly, I think the lineup should just be Evans, Harris and Schmitz. If you had asked me a dream team of presenters that weren't Clarkson, Hammond and May, that would be it. I really don't see the point of them having seven hosts to be honest.
