Top 8 Picks of Television

Fleet Captain
Across the website, I’ve been noticing the postings of top 10 picks of television shows of this year. So I decided one of my own but mine will involve top 8 picks instead of 10. So what are your top 8 picks?

Here are mine.

  1. Fargo-The television remake of the Coen Brothers’ film surprised me with its originality and standout performances. Watching the show was like reading a very good novel that you can’t quite put down.
  2. Hannibal-I have watched very little of the first season of Hannibal. But its second season hooked me in through its twists and turns, most of which revolve around the complex relationship between Will Graham and Hannibal Lector.
  3. True Detective-The darkly philosophical, atmospheric series grabbed my attention from one episode to another. The finale didn’t leave me disappointed in the slightest.
  4. Boardwalk Empire-The fifth season was a fitting epilogue to the gangster drama with its binary focus on Nucky’s past and downfall.
  5. Person of Interest-The show continues to excel through a major change in status quo brought on by a powerful AI threat.
  6. Mad Men-The first half of the final season was a compelling ride with Peggy’s well-earned ascent, Don’s slow but steady redemption, the ad firm’s power struggle, and the death of a major character.
  7. Being Human (US)- The show ended with a fantastic final season that brought the main characters’ conflicts with their supernatural selves to a satisfying climax.
  8. The Good Wife-Each episode was done with a level of class, thanks in part to the caliber of the show’s great cast with Julianna Margulies burning bright as its center.

I bought Fargo on DVD but never seen it.

The only show on your list I have watched is Hannibal. That's the only show that needs to be watched. It is simply the best show on television. The acting, the story lines, the filming, it's all beautiful. And damn was the season 2 finale insane!

My top 8:

-Game of Thrones
This is the kind of serialized television I watch for.
-Orange Is The New Black
They took a book about a real person's jail experience, and embellished it with engaging drama and amazing characters without diminishing the satirical aspect of the book.
-Silicon Valley
Being a programmer with very specific skills in algorithm development, this show is basically my wish fulfillment fantasy. Mike Judge strikes gold again.
-The Colbert Report
In the final season I think the show is ending right at its peak.
-True Detective
Brilliant performances and amazing dialog.
-Fargo
I think it's a great series but probably shouldn't be called Fargo because it doesn't have the believability of the movie it was inspired by.
-Brooklyn Nine Nine
This show has really done a great job developing its characters and has just the right amount of ridiculousness to fill the void all the departing Thursday night NBC shows left. It's pretty much the only network show I still really look forward to.
-Last Week Tonight With John Oliver
Jon Stewart style political satire but better than Stewart has been doing lately.

1. Agents of SHIELD - Its been awesome all season so far. The cast is great, and its an awesome show all around.
2. The Flash - The breakout new superhero show of the year. It isn't afraid to be a superhero show, which is great. Hopefully its around for a long time.
3. Arrow - The flashbacks are particularly weak this season, but the present day stuff more than makes up for it.
4. Last Week Tonight - John Oliver was awesome as a correspondent (and substitute host) of The Daily Show, and his solo outing was great.
5. The Carbonaro Effect - A fun hidden camera show done with magician Michael Carbonaro. He does great stuff, and watching him BS the people he tricked is great.
6. Big Bang Theory - Its getting a bit weaker every season, but its still fun and entertaining most of the time.
7. South Park - Unfortunately, this may have been the weakest season of South Park ever, but it still had a few great episodes.
8. Pawn Stars - A lot of people don't like it, and its not amazing or anything, but I like it well enough. Its always fun to see the items and sometimes learn a little bit.

Once Upon a Time

There are very few shows I actually tune into watch these days. Over the last year I've only watched a handful of shows which include

NCIS
Gotham
The Flash
The Last Ship
How to Get Away with Murder

Gotham
Fargo
Person of Interest
American Horror Story: Freak Show
Doctor Who
Big Bang Theory
Brooklyn Nine Nine
The Mindy Project

I also enjoy Halt and Catch Fire, New Girl, The Americans, Mom, and The Last Ship.

:techman:

1. Babylon.
2. Scandal
3. The Newsroom
4. Greys Anatomy
5. The 100
6. Saving Hope
7. Revenge
8. Jane the Virgin

I don't think I can name 8 good shows, but here's my top 6.

1. House of Cards
2. Doctor Who
3. Game of Thrones
4. Marvel's Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D
5. Avatar: The Legend of Korra
6. True Detectives

I did start watching Gotham, but I quickly found that it became stale and I've dropped it to "Will Finish When The Blu Ray Come Out Status".

I picked up the Blu Ray of "Marvel's Agents Of Shield" Season 1 and I really enjoyed the ending of the Season---unfortunately the beginning was blah. So I'll wait Til Season 2 hits Blu as well to see that Season.

Otherwise the only stand-out show that I've been watching weekly is "Canada's Worst Driver 10", which airs it final episode next week. I really wish this series would get a DVD release. I've downloaded all 10 seasons, but unfortunately the iPhone/iPad does not upscale 480p material to 720 or 1080p as well as as an upconverting DVD/Blu Ray player (the first 7 Seasons were shot in 16:9 standard definition).

In no particular order:

The Walking Dead
Doctor Who
Gotham
The Flash
Agents Of S.H.I.E.L.D.
Comic Book Men
Star Wars: Rebels
Brooklyn Nine-Nine

Honorable mentions go to Constantine, which is shaping up to be a solid comic book adaptation, and Survivor, which is still great after all these years.

Super Special Honorable Mention to Community, which manages to be the best show on television even when it's not on television. ;)

I did start watching Gotham, but I quickly found that it became stale and I've dropped it to "Will Finish When The Blu Ray Come Out Status".

I have to ask. If you found it too stale to watch for free on broadcast television why would you pay for DVDs and keep watching it?

Jane the Virgin is the best new show on TV this fall, by far. Funny and engaging as a character story, and often genuinely romantic.

Mad Men is as good as ever, even if awards bodies aren't paying as much attention as they used to.

Orange is the New Black is a fascinating comedy-drama hybrid that does a great job of depicting the experiences of the lower strata of American society (and the experiences of American women).

Bob's Burgers is the latter-day King of the Hill.

Game of Thrones is a shadow of the source material, but I enjoy it anyway, no matter how hard the showrunners try to stop me.

The Americans is a great spy story and 80s period piece.

Last Week Tonight has succeed as a new form of satirical news in a way that I could scarcely have dreamed when I heard that John Oliver was getting his own show.

1 The Walking Dead
2 Girl Meets World (yes Disney, but it's not the worst show I've ever seen)
3 NCIS (haven't seen it recently though :()
4 Castle
5 Bones
6 Game of Thrones
7 The Colbert Report
8 The Daily Show with Jon Stewart

This list was rather hard to make. Not a lot of really good shows (imo) on these days :(.

I don't mind that Girl Meets World is Disney, but being the best three camera sitcom on TV is kind of like being the least odorous turd.

I wish they'd stop doing origin stories for all the big franchises. I have such little interest in seeing the finer details of story we already know and much more interest in seeing what happens next.

1. Enlisted (cancelled)
2. The Walking Dead
3. Raising Hope (cancelled/ended it's run)
4. Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.
5. One Piece
6. American Dad!
7. Parks and Recreation
8. The Simpsons
