Top 50 Science Fiction Television Shows of all time...

^ You know, you make an excellent point, Destro. I'm not sure there have been "20 greatest" of hardly any genre, now that I think about it. What you have in most genres is a few good ones and a lot that range from mediocre to awful.

Their number one is, in a word, laughable. NuBSG is one of the most overrated shows in television history.

The average person doesn't even know that the Old or Nu BSG ever existed. Nothing against BSG, but seriously TOS should have been #1. It is a classic that has stood the test of time and still continues to affect people. Old BSG had very little influence, and Nu BSG hasn't been around nearly long enough to judge.

This list is kind of silly, because I don't think there are even 20 really great sci-fi TV shows in the entire existence of television!

Totally agree. :techman:

Um, Tin Man, no matter how fab ST-09 is, it won't ever be one of top 20 television shows...

My Take:

1. Farscape (1999-2003, 2005)
2. Battlestar Galactica (2003, 2005-2009)
3.) Star Trek: Deep Space Nine (1993-1999)
4.) The Prisoner (1967-1968)
5.) Jericho (2006-2008)
6.) The Twilight Zone (1959-1964)
7.) Star Trek (1966-1969)
8.) Firefly (2002)
9.) Stargate SG-1 (1997-2007)
10.) Fringe (2008-present)

Runners-Up:
The 4400 (2004-2007) -
Futurama (1999-2003)
Justice League/Justice League Unlimited (2001-2006)
Mystery Science Theater 3000 (1988-1999)
The Spectacular Spider-Man (2008-present)
Stargate Atlantis (2004-2009)
Star Trek: The Next Generation (1987-1994)
The X-Files (1993-2002)

Take a survey after May and see ST-09 in #1!

Well, yeah, Duh! what I meant, of course, was that do another survey like this for SCI-FI in general (after May) and ST-09 would be at the top just because it's the 'flaver of the moment', like nuBSG is in this survey. That's all. :p

I like how the TNG picture is of Picard from Generations (rather than the tv series, which is what the list is about) and the caption for VOY spells Kathryn as "Catherine"

Found some of their choices very strange, super heroes i do not consider scifi. But glad to see shows like Firefly, Doctor Who and such on the list.

One thing you guys should know is that Boston Globe (a NYT subsidiary) survey is dated. It came out when nuBSG was in its 3rd season and BG already had decided it was the best show ever. When the frenzy wears off all I will remember is grandparents kissing and screaming about "coming to get all of you" while trading our human military services personnel out for the love of cylons, making love to inanimate objects that were breed from our toys, and placing the enemy in key military positions. Its like Osama holding a cabinet position some day in effort to keep the peace.
The long story arcs will kill it in reruns and in collecting new fans. It may have been written better than oldBSG because of RDM's experience with ST, newer graphic technology, and the liberal measures allowed in todays cable TV scriptwriting. BSG was good as a whole series but not an episodic memory.
My top 5 is:

ST: TOS
ST: TNG
Babylon 5
Twilight Zone
X-Files

IMHO

Ten years from now NUBSG will be so forgotten, especially after that silly ending, it wont even crack the top ten...

Not only that, but people are going to laugh at it as being one of the biggest pranks in the history of storytelling.
While I don't care to speculate on what people will think of NuBSG in ten years I don't think the finale or whether or not the writers were pulling everything out of their ass is going to be that big of a deal. I mean The Prisoner is still considered a classic 40 years later and I dare anyone to say that BSG's finale was less satisfying than The Prisoner's.

When I first saw the link my immediate thought was please, Please, PLEASE don't have BSG at number one. I don't have a problem with it being in the top ten, but I get the feeling that critics who haven't watched it much think it is one big commentary on the Iraq war and that makes it everyone's politically correct choice.

Other than that just a few minor quibbles. I think 3rd Rock should be a lot higher, if you are going to consider it a sci-fi show. It really handled its main plot point of a humorous look at earth from an outsiders perspective very well. Futurama too. Dark Angel better than Buffy? No we can't have that. Hitchhiker should be in top 10. Zone should be in top 3. No Japan? No Spectreman? Ultraman? Johnny Socko? Space Giants? It would have been cool to include that cheesy marvel comics show from the 60's too.

I loved Battlestar all the way through. But I do agree on your point that it will not fare well in reruns, due to its non-episodic nature. But I guess RDM and D. Eick weren't planning to make a rerun show, it was for the "here and now." I think that's why you never see BSG reruns in SciFi's regular lineup, despite its popularity, as you do with other shows such as Enterprise and any of the various Stargate incarnations.

I agree with some of this list. But, man I have never seen B5 - it must be good though since they say it's better than DS9. DS9 should be right near the top. I can't really judge because most of the series - I have never seen. But, top 10 for me:

1 BSG(new)
2 DS9
3 Lost
4 TNG
5 X-Files
6 SG-1
7 Firefly
8 Sliders
9 VOY
10 The 4400

Also: Does anyone make an actual list any more? I'm thoroughly bored with "Top 50" lists which are spread out over 51 pages.
Crap, I know. I'm convinced that all these sites are just trying to artificially inflate the amount adviews they get, rather than getting paid once they now get paid 51 times.

Well, of course nuBSG won - the reporter was from the SciFi channel!

Sorry, there's no way that VOY deserves to be on that list, and DS9 didn't make it at all; they shouldn't swap places, because DS9 should place a lot higher. And Sliders sure doesn't deserve a Top 10 seat! Firefly should've been significantly higher than Logan's Run, as well - the latter has no place in a "Top 50," anyway.

I think the simple fact that DS9 was left completely off the list points out how worthless the list is - whoever compiled it had no idea what they were talking about.
