Top 5 TAS episodes

[Vasquez Rocks]

I recently finished watching the entire animated series for the first time and I found it to be a pretty enjoyable series overall. I was curious what others thought of it and what their top 5 episodes would be.

Mine are:

1. Yesteryear
2. Beyond the Farthest Star
3. Bem
4. Once Upon a Planet
5. The Counter-Clock Incident

I enjoyed it too and think it's a little under-rated. I liked the art style and M'Ress & Arex.
Shame it didn't show any more of the Enterprise's sister ships,though...

I have things I like in all of them.

Definitely, "Yesteryear" is my favourite. "Bem" comes in for a lot of criticism, but I like the quirky guest character very much and the jungle visuals are stunning, esp. on DVD. "The Counter-clock Incident" is also rubbished by many, but I loved the addition of the Aprils and the (weird) science blows your mind. "Albatross" and "The Jihad" are solid, colourful whodunnits.

So that would be my top five, but that leaves out "The Slaver Weapon", "The Time Trap" and "The Terratin Incident", all very successful episodes. "The Slaver Weapon" introduced me to the writings of Larry Niven. His "Tales of Known Space" and the "Ringworld" series, featuring the kzinti, are indelible in my mind. The many years, I could only watch TSW with the last three or so minutes chopped off. My grainy crosstaped copy of the episode ended just before the kzinti ship explodes!

Love the great DVD set and all the bonus features.

Japanese Starlog once offered the above pic as a limited edition cel. (Japan had a second wave added to the range of cels once offered by Tuttle & Bailey in the US). I love that the Slaver's weapon the kzin captain is holding is in "watermelon mode" in this pic. Of course, neither Arex nor M'Ress appeared in "The Slaver Weapon".

Tuttle & Bailey's first set added Arex and M'Ress to a scene with the aliens from "The Jihad":

[RAMA]

My favs:

1. Slaver Weapon-Niven's Kzin!! Mind games, super weapons, ancient artifacts, and 8 foot cats...what's not to like?
2. Jihad-A "quest" story that I'd love to see in live action.
3. Yesteryear-A story so good, that even the non-canon script elements were used in TOS-R and ST09.
4. How Sharper than a Serpents Tooth-Trendy in it's day (Chariots of the Gods) the plot is used to convey how we've moved beyond god worship. Actually better than TOS's "Who Mourns for Adonais" with a similar theme.
5. Beyond the farthest Star-Just love it for the exploratory aspects of it. An ancient warning, organically spun spacecraft...this is another great adventure i'd like to see re-animated or in live action.

For years I could barely see this show, first it was on before cable, then the channels on cable always seemed to have bad reception. Then only the grainy versions of the episodes were available. The DVDs were awesome!

1. "Yesteryear" - a unique look into Spock's youth.

2. "The Pirates of Orion" - includes a line that provides a quick glimpse into McCoy's lack of trust in technology that foreshadows the reveal in ST V that he couldn't save his father's life. Something to the effect "What's the use of being a doctor? We're only as good as our technology makes us." Which prompts Kirk to say "If you really believe that, you're wouldn't still be a doctor after 25 years."

3. "Albatross" - an interesting look into McCoy's past and his self doubts about his medical expertise. This also echoes his kicking himself over his inability to save his father.

4. "The Jihad" - the interesting supporting characters really help bring this adventure alive. Lara's flirting with Kirk and Kirk shying away from her. Sord and Em-3-Green's bellyaching with each other but having each other's back when the chips are down.

5. "The Counter-Clock Incident" - The introduction of the Aprils expands our perception of the Trekverse. The mounting tension as the Enterprise approaches its destruction entering the supernova the first time and trying to escape the second time before the crew "dies" in infancy lends some energy to a plot laden with some crappy scientific ideas in the alternate universe.

That wasn't very difficult considering that 4 of my 5 were already listed upthread.

When I was 11 a librarian recommended "A Mote in God's Eye" by Larry Niven and Jerry Pournelle. I started reading all of Niven's books and stories. I had seen "Slaver Weapon" a year or so before, so I was thrilled when I came across Niven's Kzinti stories.

Maybe M'Ress and Arex met the Kzin captain in the Ent's restroom (hey, if Chekov could meet Khan there, why not?).

Quite possibly. Looks like M'Ress is asking to borrow the Kzin's hair dryer. (Yes, I know it's the infamous Slaver weapon. Just go along with the joke, gang.)
