Top 5 Pre-"A Time to Books/series"

label

Vice Admiral
Admiral
So, as some of you know, I recently read through the "A Time to..." series and "Death in Winter" to start getting caught up with current Trek Lit. I also plan on reading all the books after Death in Winter, at least on the TNG/Titan and DS9 tracks.

However, aside from "Q-Squared" (Which I loved by the way), I've never read a single TNG novel. I don't really want to go back and reread the many books that are set before the "A Time to" series books, but, I would be interested in reading perhaps the top 5-6 books from that era.

So, all you veteran Trek Lit denizens would provide your top 5 picks aside from Q-Squared, of course. Also, a trilogy like the Q-Zone, Space, Strike can count as only 1 choice.

Thanks in advance.

The Romulan Stratagem by Robert Greenberger is really good. A political thriller (at least, that's how I see it) with a solid and surprising ending.

Rogue Saucer by John Vornholt was pretty good. It's a bit like the episode Starship Mine, and it's got Admiral Nechayev and the Maquis.

The Death of Princes by John Peel is one of my personal favorites. A medical crisis on a new, slightly xenophobic member world and a Prime Directive situation combine together to leave the Enterprise crew divided and unable to assist each other.

The Battle of Betazed by Susan Kearney & Charlotte Douglas is another favorite of mine, mostly because it shows the liberation of Betazed during the Dominion War, as well as provides more information on the Betazoids and the Enterprise-E crew during that time period.

And, finally, Immortal Coil by Jeffrey Lang is cool because it's got andoids and AI out the wazoo, with a compelling plot and an interesting character being (re)introduced.

Here's a chronological listing for the TNG fiction I've read over the years:
2350 - Double Helix: The First Virtue (Double Helix #6)
2364 - Double Helix: Infection (Double Helix #1)
2365 - Double Helix: Vectors (Double Helix #2)
2369 - Double Helix: Red Sector (Double Helix #3)
2371 - Double Helix: Quarantine (Double Helix #4)
2372/2373 - Section 31: Rogue
2375 - Double Helix: Double or Nothing (Double Helix #5)
2376 - Gateways: Doors into Chaos (Gateways #2); Diplomatic Implausibility

Of that list, here's my Top 5:
1. Section 31: Rogue
2. Double Helix: Vectors
3. Double Helix: Quarantine
4. Diplomatic Implausibility
5. Gateways: Doors into Chaos

My top picks would be:
Imzadi: Peter David's story of the origins of the Riker/Troi relationship. One of my absolute favorites.
Reunion: Michael Jan Friedman's murder mystery involving Picard's crew from the Stargazer. The Stargazer crew members introduced in this have become the standard crew for pretty much all of the stories Pocket has done involving the Stargazer, including the Stargazer series.
Immortal Coil: A Jeffrey Lang penned movie era TNG story involving pretty much every artificial intelligence featured on TNG and TOS, Bruce Maddox, Ira Graves, Noonien Soong, and a surprise guest star from TOS.
I know that's only three, but those are the only pre-Relaunch TNG novels I've read, other than Q-Squared, which you've already read, and Gateways: Door Into Chaos, which I don't remember well enough to feel comfortable recommending.

You're just looking for TNG novels?

At this point, yes, thou at some point when I finish my ds9 rewatch I'll circle back around and hit a few of the ds9 classics.....

I don't believe there are any DS9 classics that precede the relaunch, unless you count the Millennium trilogy?

I actually don't know much about what DS9 novels that are set before the DS9 relaunch, I'm just assuming there's a handlful (like A Stitch in Time which I just completed not long ago) that are worth reading.............

Q-Squared, Imzadi, Q-In-Law, & Vendetta by Peter David, Immortal Coil by Jeffrey Lang, Metamorphosis by Jean Lorrah, Masks by John Vornholt, The Romulan Stratagem by Robert Greenberger, Grounded, by David Bischoff, and Reunion by Michael Jan Friedman.

I tried to narrow it down to five, I really did, but these 10 were the shortest I can make it.

Man, I want to go re-read all the numbered novels now.

star trek the next generation Q in law by peter david
star trek deep space nine bloodletter by k.w. jeter
star trek voyager echoes
star trek doctor's orders by diane duane
star trek time trap by david dvorkin

those are some of my favorite prerelaunch material . other wise I would list a lot more than that.

Imzadi
Dark Mirror
Intellivore
A Rock and a Hard Place
Diplomatic Implausibility

Are probably the top five for me.

Masks, q-in-law, blaze of glory, the last stand, the romulan stratagem & the q continuum trilogy are ones I also remember particularly enjoying.

tng only huh ...

Q SPACE
Q ZONE ALL BY GREG COX
Q STRIKE
Q SQUARD
Q IN LAW BOTH BY PETER DAVID

If you had'nt guessed I am a Q fan as well as KLINGON :klingon::klingon::klingon::klingon:

So based on the votes right now, here's my Top 5.

Immortal Coil
Imzadi
Q-In-Law
Vendetta
The Romulan Stratagem

I also had already planned on reading the Q Continuum trilogy and Section 31: Rogue just because I like both types of stories.

Thanks for those who have voted so far, and for those who still will. It's helpful to have a condensed list of novels that I know are good going into them. :)

Gulliver's Fugitives
Strike Zone
Rock and a Hard Place
Rogue Saucer
Q Squared
