I've seen Shaun of the Dead, but I don't remember anything about dogs looking up.
As for the actual question, when my dog watches the ceiling fan she's laying directly under it and has to lift her head straight up to see it. Same goes for when she chases birds flying over head.

I remember it in Shaun of the Dead, I think it actually comes from a conversation Simon, Nick and Edgar have on the DVD commentary for Spaced debating the issue (stemed from the scene when Daisy is shouting to her dog Colin in the garden and he doesn't look up at her. It's some point in late Series 2, I can't remember the episode offhand)

But for the record, yes they can. I used to do that to my dog from my bedroom window plenty of time- shout/wave down to the garden and she'd hear me and look up and see me.

Anyone who's ever held a treat over a dog's head knows that they can look up just fine. Panting, drooling, and, if held in suspense long enough, barking may also ensue.

New Beatle geek argument--Paul: Alive, or William Campbell for the past 51 years?

So we have settled that a dog can look up but can they pop their paws much in the same way a human can pop their knuckles?

    Best Bond? Connery or Moore?

    How important is (Trek) canon?

Who is the better match for Hermione - Ron or Harry?

And from the shipper war period in the ENT forum - Trip/T'Pol or Archer/T'Pol?

    You've asked about ...

    Veronica vs Betty?

    AND

    Ginger vs Mary Anne?

But what about Wilma vs Betty?

    Or Lucy vs Vivian?

Or who played the best Lois Lane?

    Or the best Starbuck?

Or my favorite nerd question from a fellow high-schooler to our biology teacher back in the 1970's...

"If the 6 million dollar man braces himself with his human left arm, while using his bionic right arm to pick up something extremely heavy, why doesn't he pull out all the muscles in his left shoulder?"

I've heard it. It's contradicted by 2010, though.

I think I have come up with a few more.

    1 Was Abraham Lincoln, gay?

2 Whatever happened to the Borg baby on "Voyager?"

3 Were they all dead from the start on "Lost" because of that final pic of ship wreckage in the series final?

4 What happened to all the humans in the "Cars" universe?

5 Did the real Arturo slide with the sliders in that episode were they thought they were home but Arturo's double was their and the 2 got into a fight so it's unknown who did slide at the end on the show, "Sliders?"

John allowed Yoko Ono to sing on his records. Hell, John allowed Yoko Ono to touch him.
Meanwhile, if you can't listen to "Band on the Run" (full album) endlessly, there's something wrong with you.

I understand that John's wife and Cher's old husband had a martial arts school that taught how to fight with a quarterstaff.

Everyone knows that Stig was the allegedly dead one...though Barry tried to muddle the issue.

Nirvana was so far above the rest of those other bands, I didn't even bother to list them.
