Top 10 Best of Treklit of the Past 15 Years

I think for me it's the character consistency. In the TNG and Voyager relaunch novels, you get most of the same cast. DS9 was really unrecognizable for me during the relaunch. I'll probably go back and revisit them someday. The only DS9 during the series I think I've even read is the Millennium Trilogy.
I get that. Did you start with Avatar? S.D. Perry is great with characterization. I think starting there make later changes over the years more manageable. I loved Avatar and was able to follow the series along for a while. When I tried coming back to it at a “current” spot years later, it seemed so different I felt like I had too much catching up to do. Plus I just didn’t like some rather major aspects of it. Maybe I would have felt differently if I’d kept up with it. But Avatar and the “DS9 Season 8” idea I liked a lot. Seeing Thirishar, Vaughn and Trier, and Taran’atar…on the covers and publicity material out, it was like seeing new actors come into a series after the summer hiatus, and it was great.

The problem there is when you know there are new cast, you wonder who from the cast you already know and like are going. That's not good. It's not good to start putting new crew on the covers until sometime later on after they've been introduced.

Nah, disagree. You know the cast you know. They haven’t changed over the summer. Avatar is Season 8 of DS9. Just like lots of shows they introduce a few new characters after the summer hiatus, do a media blitz with their faces and, when applicable, interviews. And you have to wait until episode two to find out where so and so character is up to and the new season plot twist. Avatar is early enough in the Relaunch where nothing too radical has really changed, and you get to just explore the new characters like an episode of the week.
