Tony Dungy - a class act set to retire

It's being reported that the Colts are calling a 5pm press conference today, to announce Tony Dungy will be retiring from the NFL.

As much as I feel the league will miss and could sorely use his soft-spoken class and demeanor, I'm honestly glad for him. A couple of years ago I had a chance to attend a breakfast where he was speaking. His charities, faith-based works and so on are extremely important to him. He's won a Super bowl, earned the admiration and respect of player and coach alike... there isn't much left for him to accomplish in the NFL.

Good for him. He always seemed like a stand up guy. I'm surprised he didn't retire after the death of his son a few years back. The way the team closed ranks around him and supported him spoke volumes about his character.

Thanks for all you've done for the game.

At that same speaking engagement, he alluded to his son's death but only in a very roundabout way and not specifically. Essentially, he seemed (to me at least) to say that the time immediately after the death it was God and being at his job that helped get him through it.

I agree 100%. He always has been a class act and probably always will be. I'll miss seeing him around.

Dungy is a class act. It won't be the same without him around.
I was about to say pretty much the same thing, so I just quoted you to say "ditto".

I will miss him but I'm happy for him to be able to enjoy retirement. He's not an old guy by any stretch of the imagination so I hope he gets to do other things besides football that he wants. :)

There are a great many guys who could learn this. Getting otu while they still have their health and can walk upright without having pulled out all of their hair.

Definitely. There are a few that I could name that I worry about every week that they're gonna blow a gasket right there on the sideline.

I've been hearing this question bandied about a fair amount these past couple of days:

Does Tony Dungy belong in the Hall of Fame?

Personally, I'd say yes, because:
- he's an innovator, having created the Cover 2 defense in Tampa
- he's a ground-breaker, by being the first black coach to win a Super Bowl
- he's a winner, having set records for most consecutive seasons making the playoffs, also denoted by most consecutive seasons with 10 and 12 wins.

Given that he's a plain nice guy with a spotless reputation, there isn't anything there that would justify not voting for him.

Anyone hear Bill Romanowski's interview? He was going off about his knowledge of nutritional programs, proper training and how the future of the NFL is hyperbaric chambers. He says the Colts would've won three Super Bowls if he had coached them instead of Dungy.

To be fair, the one knock some folks might have on Dungy is that he could have won more in the post-season. Several times his teams one one and done.

^The Colts are the Atlanta Braves of the NFL. But how many teams would die to even make the playoffs that many years running.

As a New England fan, I can't stand the Colts. But Dungy just seemed like such a nice and gracious guy.

I think he's HOF material. Beyond what was mentioned above, he is the career wins leader in two different teams.

Romanowski needs to crawl back into his hyperbaric chamber and shut the door. His "nutrition regimen" has affected his brain.

For him to even be mentioned in the same breath with someone of Dungy's character is insulting to Dungy.
