Tony Dead?!? Fuggedaboutit!

Tony wasn't shot and killed... it's a heart attack during that last onion ring. Notice how his last line references the onion rings he ordered. Notice how his family members are making good progress chewing through theirs? Notice how when the door dings Tony happens to stop chewing and makes a weird face for a half second? Do you pause masticating your delicious onion ring just because you see your daughter entering through a doorway as expected? I think not.

The other shots of him stressing about who is coming through the door are there to establish that there is extra undue strain on his heart caused by all the worrying. The stuff about never hearing the bullet that kills you is a red herring. By Tony knowing that, and expecting that, it can't be the manner of his death. It is in fact contributing to his malaise worrying if "Members Only Guy" is there to kill him. He never sees his bullet coming because he is too busy expecting a literal bullet. Tony's bullet is the final onion ring.

Actually, that pretty much is his job.

But that's what we're saying: he did spell it out. He spelled it out meticulously.

First you say it isn't his job to spell it out, now you're saying he did spell it out. :borg:

If you're saying he needed to actually depict Tony's blood sprayed across his family in a horrific scene just so there was no confusion, well, I can only disagree.

No, all I'm doing is reacting to your statement that it isn't a writer's job to spell something out, by wryly pointing out that, by definition, it IS his job to spell things out.

Destructor isn't responsible for my statements, you know. :mallory:

I do find the suggestion that writers may never use subtlety or implication to be quite bizarre. What, writers have to beat you over the head with every plot point? They shouldn't give the audience any credit at all?

Humor it is a difficult concept.

A WRITER' JOB IS TO SPELL THINGS. WITH LETTERS. TO MAKE WORDS. :brickwall:

And, mea culpa not noticing it was a Destructor making the second statement.

Moot point, since sadly James Gandolfini is no longer with us. If someone ever had plans to do a followup movie or miniseries, it isn't going to happen now, unless it is a Paulie Walnuts spinoff, or maybe AJ moves out to Hollywood..
