Indeed, Tom was the comedic relief in the film and like all of the actors a fantastic performance.
My point is that as good as Nolan's movies can be, he has a disappointing tendency to shy away from some trademark elements of his source material (costumes, the bat crashing through Bruce Wayne's window, the batcave) for fear that they'll look too "silly" on the big screen. And I find it equally disappointing that so many comic fans seem to go right along with it.

They probably go right along with it because the available evidence bears out the idea that those elements do look silly on the big screen.

I don't see how you can say that, since we have yet to see them attempt to do the comics' version of the Batcave, the Batmobile and the costume on the big screen. For six movies, we've only seen the filmmakers' versions of the same.
And which comic version of the Batcave and Batmobile do you actually mean?
What was silly about the Burton cave? It was almost as basic and realistic as the one in the Nolan movie. The first cave had a bank of television monitors and a chair. It had a place for the car and the batwing. No collected mementos yet of course, don't really think there's a place for a Giant Penny or a T-Rex. I guess I just disagree with your assessement that we didn't get a Batcave.

This thread has gone off topic a little.
Or an even-older-than-Chris-O'Donnell-Robin!
I firmly believe that the only reason people are against having Robin is because of how he was depicted in "Forever" and "Batman and Robin" which was fundamentally wrong.
