Tom Crusie In Star Trek???

How about if Cruise is a redshirt who meets a swift but painful death? I think I'd pay to see the movie just on that alone.
Sort of like the Guest Star of the Week on Police Squad!, who was always offed by the time the opening credits ran?

Tom Cruise is in the movie? What does Xenu need with a Starship anyway?

/Eh, it's fine with me. It's not like you can blame him for Battlefield: Earth.

I doubt if Cruise will be in the movie, but if he is then that would be just fine with me. And TC is most definitely a major movie star. Some of the flaky stuff he has done recently have diminished his image, but his overall resume definitely qualifies him as a major star.

Al Pacino, Jack Nicholson, and Dustin Hoffman to name a few. Don't get me wrong, I like Tom Cruise, it's just that I wouldn't put him in the "major movie star" category.

That's because you're not writing checks for studios.

His career has stumbled some because of his public antics in the last couple of years, but he was and is a much bigger "movie star" - which is a different thing from "great actor," with which you seem to have confused it - than at least two of the three worthies you named there.

Trekkies are a funny bunch. They hate a guy that is supposedly even bigger than all the Trek celebrities combined, and would bring in the general audience to see this movie. But they have to hate him just because he is a big movie star.

Sir, with all due respect, did you see MI:III? ;)
Sir, with all due respect, did you see Two for the Money, The Bucket List, and Perfume: The Story of a Murderer? Those being relatively recent films featuring Al Pacino, Jack Nicholson, and Dustin Hoffman respectively, the gentlemen you cite as major movie stars.

So Would I!!! Tommy was a decent guy back when I knew him... but once he got into the Scientology crap he went downhill fast... became a real jerk. Although it would not be that unusual to have a major celebrity with a cameo role... look how many famous celebrities had walk-ons in TNG.

Okay, that would be something I could live with. This, or hide his face behind some real heavy make-up.

Any producer or casting director who chose Shatner over Cruise would be pulling shots in Starbucks the next day. :guffaw:

If we weren't talking about Star Trek I would agree with you on that as well. But the name of William Shatner is so strongly connected to Star Trek, that a cameo of him would have much more meaning than one of Mr. Cruise. It would honor his achievments in creating a modern popcultural icon, while Cruise-cameo in a Trek film would just be pointless. It's like: Look, this Admiral in the background is Tom Cruise! WTF, they got Tom Cruise doing a cameo in a Star Trek film?

A Cruise cameo would just be distracting.

Except, of course, for the fact that so many more people are interested in and like Tom Cruise than William Shatner.

Interested in Tom Cruise: yeah, definitely more people than in William Shatner
Cruise's likeabillity: Don't know. He's definitily not seen as very simpathetic where I come from.

However, let's face it: We just disagree on this matter.

You can measure the difference by how much more money Cruise is paid - which is motivated by how many more people pay to see films that he appears in.

More than enough people like him to make him one of the most recognized and successful actors in the world. William Shatner's not in that class, not even bringing up the bottom percentile of it - never has been and never will be.

Well, popularity wasn't my initial argument at all, but that aside:
Personally, I would still prefer a Shatner over a Cruise cameo because a Shatner cameo is more meaningful in a Star Trek context.

I heard something recently about JJ. putting Cruise in the movie, I've never seen a movie I didn't like with him in it, yes that includes MI3 and definately Vanila Sky, i'm not going to let my personal feelings about Scientology be the judge becouse that's his buissness not mine, but I think he's a good actor and would bring in some general audience. I do think his style of acting is not really in step with Star Trek, but who know's what he's going to do.
