Tom Crusie In Star Trek???

Look at ST VI. Slater had a cameo. It added absolutely nothing to the film. Plummer, is a big name and played a big role, and again, it's not like it was a blockbuster film (despite being one of the best Trek films).

Slater's presence didn't add anything to Star Trek VI, but it didn't detract either. There was a point to his scene - Sulu wasn't going to sell out his old friends on the Enterprise. Sure, the ensign part could have been played by anybody, so it didn't matter either way. I had no idea who Slater was when I first saw the movie, and though I've since been told he was apparently famous or something I've never seen him in another picture.

Obviously, I know who Tom Cruise is, and I've seen one or two films in which he's starred. The one I liked the most is Eyes Wide Shut, but Collateral is also good. I think Cruise has a gift for playing cold, unlikeable antiheroes and villains and is far better in those than his more conventional leading man turns, such as Ethan Hawke in the Mission Impossible series. An innocuous cameo similar to Slater's is fine by me.

I'm not sure if I'd call Plummer a big name. Plummer strikes me as one of those respected thespian-type actors, like David Warner, who also appeared in this film. He's not a box office draw so far as I know, but I don't know much.

I don't care if Cruise has a cameo as long as it doesn't take me out of the movie.
And I find the "I won't watch it if Cruise is in it" talk to be rather silly, Cruise can bring some mainstream cred to this movie that is much needed.

I don't care one way or the other if Tom Cruise has a cameo.

And he certainly can't hurt the box office.

It is true that his public antics of the past couple of years have tarnished his reputation, to put it mildly. But he's still a major star who was in some of the biggest movies of the past 15 years.

A couple things:

1. Cruise's antics led to his break-up with Paramount and ended up with him and his business partner restarting United Artists elsewhere. I doubt he and the studio would have anything to do with each other so soon, especially on what has become a summer tentpole for Paramount.

2. That said, there was an open casting call for people with unusual features to play extras. Tom's off-center smile certainly qualifies.

A cameo (when used correctly) has the effect of upgrading the calibre (in the minds of the audience) of the finished product, but this occurs only after that audience has paid their admission ticket and is already watching the movie.

John Q. sees Tom Cruise as Captain Ricky of the USS Reliant and says, "Holy shit! That's Tom Cruise! I can't believe a big star like that would ever be in Star Trek. Star Trek must be cooler than I thought." John Q. then straightens himself a little bit in his chair and enjoys the rest of the movie just a little bit more than he would have otherwise.

That's when it's done well.

But cameos don't typically convince people who wouldn't otherwise have gone to see the movie to get up off their asses and go to the theatre.

A cameo might cause a little bit of buzz if it is mentioned in a movie review or two, but it isn't usually used to promote or sell the movie.

Paramount had also, for all intents and purposes, severed its relationship with Star Trek television shows and movies until J.J. Abrams (with his Q rating in tow) showed up and convinced them otherwise.

It may be that Cruise just showed up to visit his buddy Abrams on the set. But if Abrams wants Cruise in the film for a cameo and Tom agrees, he's in. Paramount isn't going to trust Abrams with the future of one of their most lucrative franchises and then slap him on the wrist for something so minor.

Cruise (:borg:)

That wasnt much of a cameo as it was more about him wanting to be in a Star Trek film and his mother was the films casting director who managed to get him in. That bit of the film was meant to be Rand.

What makes you think Cruises bit would be anything better?

The point I was responding to was that someone suggested big names will draw in a general audience. It won't, unless it's one hell of a film! Which would be nice for a Trek film! :)

trekmovie.com has debunked this rumor so those who don't like a Tom Cruise cameo can relax now. Cruise did have a nice cameo in one of the Austin Powers movies. Of course it's a little easier to add cameo scenes to comedies.

I have to disagree with those who say TC is not a good actor. He has had many good performances, especially when working with good directors (like the late great Stanley Kubrick).
