Tom Cruise=Damaged Commodity

I feel like discriminating against Cruise for his beliefs is as dispicable as any other kind of discrimination. As far as I know, scientologist are not hurting anyone, so why should I care? Cruise is a great actor.

Except that part when they harass, blackmail, sue, stalk, spy on, slander, intimidate, and threaten anyone who says anything bad about Scientology. Oh and that part when they purposely break up families by forcing members to cut off any ties with family members who are not apart of the cult.

Not only that, but L. Ron Hubbard freely ADMITTED that he made the whole thing up just to make money! And I quote:

Writing for a penny a word is ridiculous. If a man really wants to make a million dollars, the best way would be to start his own religion.

Many could say the same of all religions, especially at different points in their evolution. Scientology is a young religion and it'll take time for it to mature.

The current climate against it only fuels ignorance and fear.

I feel like discriminating against Cruise for his beliefs is as dispicable as any other kind of discrimination.

Totally agree with this sentiment.

On one hand I think it's silly for people to be unable to separate Cruise the movie star from Cruise the person, but I can also understand this since I personally have a hard time disassociating an artists personality from his work.

Some actors can only play themselves. Sean Connery springs to mind. Does that make him a bad actor?

I hope there's more where that came from, because that's not an admission of anything.

I could say that one should wear a long coat if one plans to shoplift, that doesn't mean that if I'm wearing a long coat it's because I plan to shoplift.

But if you put on that coat and then proceeded to shoplift, it would be pretty clear. Or do you think despite this comment of his, he actually founded a religion in sincerity?

Or do you think despite this comment of his, he actually founded a religion in sincerity?

What I believe his motivations were - and indeed I doubt they were sincere - is irrelevant, the fact is that L. Ron Hubbard's comments don't, contrary to Babaganoosh's claim, constitute an admission of duplicity.

Tom Cruise already sucked before it was revealed that he was insane. "Great actor", no fucking way. Every single one of his movies are crap.

Exactly.

And if you are bothered by movies with actors who believe an alien trapped souls in a volcano shouldn't you be bothered by movies with actors who believe an invisible man who lives in the sky will take you to paradise and send your enemies to burn forever?

Meh, scientology is no weirder than Christianity. Is Cruise a bit nutty? Sure, but then I also think Christians who insist that the world is 6,000 years old and that carbon dating was invented by Satan to "confuse us" are equally nutty.

And guess what? Both have an equal right to their religious beliefs.

You should care that he's a bad actor in bad movies.

Agreed.

If he's a bad actor, that's got nothing to do with Scientology.

I disagree. While I was never a fan, I really thought he was perfect in both Eyes Wide Shut and Magnolia. By MI:III, all this ass could do is smile coldly and stare blankly. His abilities appear to be in decline because he can't think for himself anymore.

I need to see Magnolia one of these days...heard great stuff about it back in the day, especially if you watch the entire Cruise infomercial they shot and only excerpted in the flick.

(Off to the Netflix queue.)

BTW, I don't own "Vanilla Sky" but I DO own "Abre Los Ojos". :)

Your inability to separate Tom Cruise's character in the movie from his real life personality is your failing, not his.
Which is a good point. What's with this ongoing inability to just let actors act and not expect them to resemble the characters they play (especially in beliefs or personality type, which cannot be seen onscreen anyway) as a precondition of their employment?

Because he's fucking crazy.

What if Dick Cheney(one of the most evil persons of our current times) were to portray Pinocchio's father, or Joseph, father of Jesus...would we take his performance seriously?

It does matter who is performing the task if they are more then simply an "actor". Cruise has willingly placed himself out there in the national media as a spokesperson for an absurd cult.

His previous movies are ruined for me, and his future endeavours are a waste.
