Toho is making their own Godzilla movies again!

Yesterday, new images of Godzilla from Toho's upcoming Godzilla: Resurgence film leaked online. They gave us new looks a the ferocious creature and revealed its skin was possibly covered in radioactive burns. Now a new report explains that the city-stomping beast will go through three transformations during the film.
BMD reports that "when we first see Godzilla in the film, he is going to be a burnt-out and scarred monster," which is what we saw in the leaked photos. "But he won’t look like that the whole film. Like some of his foes before him, Godzilla will actually change as the film progresses. I’ve been told that by his third form, he should look like a much more standard Godzilla."
"We still don’t know if Godzilla is going to fight other monsters or end up being a good guy," they added. "But I have heard that this new suit is way bigger than normal, almost twice the size of an average person, which is very exciting."

They say the bolded part like the two things are mutually exclusive.

I just hope in this movie they don't go with the white eyes as they did in All Out Attack. That kept throwing me off.

Now I'm wondering if this is going to be a complete reboot.

^I'd be surprised if Toho did a reboot that ignored the '54 film completely. All seven distinct Toho continuities to date have included it (or a version of it) as Godzilla's original appearance, even though they've changed their assumptions about what Godzilla was and how he was created. And given that the English title is Godzilla: Resurgence, that suggests the return of Godzilla rather than a new beginning.

The Smog Monster crossed my mind too. And I think they'll be returning Godzilla ot his roots as a villain instead of a "good guy".

That is a hell of a big tail on Godzilla this time. His tail is longer than the rest of his body. And he seems to be similar in appearance to Burning Godzilla from Destoroyah, although he can't be, since that guy melted.

Otherwise, it looks pretty intense and serious. Interesting music. And it looks like a pretty large-scale production.

That looks really cool. I like the red glow coming through Big G's skin, it almost looks like lava. It definitely seems like they going back to a more grounded, darker style.
So we do know if this will have any kind of connection to earlier movies?

looks alright. i dunno. i just have a wait and see attitude about this film for some reason.

It might have been too early for a trailer. They apparently don't have much footage of Godzilla in motion, yet, seeing as he is quite immobile (aside from his tail) in that trailer.

Otherwise, I like it.

Well, every Toho Godzilla movie since 1955 has been nominally a sequel to the 1954 original, even though they've branched off from it into seven different continuities to date. I'd be surprised if that weren't the case here as well, especially given the title.

Looks awesome. The face is terrifying and easily the best part of the costume. I'm not sure about the tail; it all comes down to how they use it.

That's it- it has been many years since I saw that film.
My Father and I would stay up all night watching these movies on one of the weird UHF channels on Saturday night. They have their own surreal logic about how the monsters did things...

Well, Hedorah was by far the most surreal of them all. I suspect the whole thing was meant to be the main child character's daydream -- much like the terrible clip-show film that preceded it, All Monsters Attack, but much trippier. Either that or it was filtered through the kid's perceptions. Anyway, it was so off-putting to audiences that the director was barred from ever returning to the franchise. Although I kind of respect it for its imagination and experimentation. It was certainly bolder than a lot of the other films from that part of the Showa era.
