To smoke or not to smoke that is the ques....

Cigars are about as dangerous as anything else in this life, bacon on your hamburger, a six-pack of beer, sex, driving your car on the freeway, etc.

Did anyone else read that and think of how awesome it'd be to do them all at the same time?

True, but it is very minor and more akin to the health risks of drinking alcoholic beverages. Cigarettes are a promise of deadly cancer to come. Cigars are about as dangerous as anything else in this life, bacon on your hamburger, a six-pack of beer, sex, driving your car on the freeway, etc.
...inhaling fire... :p

You don't inhale cigars.
But there's a risk that you might! And if you accidentally do, fire in your throat would probably constitute a health risk.

A risk that you might do something that could maybe lead to a health risk is hardly a solid reason not to do something.

There's a risk that a bad accident can occur in most of what we do. Driving your car is a big one, where there are huge odds that you could be in a fatal accident through no fault of your own.

I'm not even going to talk about slipping in the shower and breaking your neck, something that actually happens a lot more than we hear about.

Yes, technically there is some risk with cigars. But that risk is very small and most of the health risk (mouth or throat cancer...maybe) is usually non-fatal. You can get mouth and throat cancer from drinking alcoholic beverages too, and the odds are about equal from all the reading I've done.

Cigarettes are not anywhere near the same level as cigars as far as health risks. All research shows that if you smoke cigarettes regularly then you are all but guaranteed to get some very nasty and often fatal cancers, in particular lung cancer.

It is very annoying how cigars get lumped with cigarettes when people discuss health risks.

Throw them away.

If you're serious about stopping then stop now. And use the fact that you've thrown away a packet of cigarettes as an incentive to not start again - after all, if you do start smoking again, that was a wasted pack of cigarettes that you could have used and another (insert whatever price cigarettes are these days) that you'll have to spend.

My wise board-mates, smokers preferred;)

I have decided I'm going to try and give up smoking. All usual reasons.
Thing is I haven't convince myself yet. I have a pack in front of me. Do I
a) have one, hate it and convince myself
b) resist as long as possible (taking into Borg code)
c) throw them away?

n.b. c is not really an option but on all multi choice there are usually 3.
How did other's quit?

If you decide to quit: (c) for sure!

You've got to get rid of any cigarettes you have in the house, and possibly throw away lighters and matches too. You just make it harder on yourself to quit if you make it so easy for yourself to relapse.

Yeah, no joke. A smoker who's trying to quit needs to get rid of all the paraphernalia, just as an alcoholic has to get rid of the bottles.

K'ehleyr, if you can't bring yourself to throw your smokes away, then you're not actively trying to quit, but merely telling yourself platitudes while avoiding the actual steps necessary. I don't mean to be harsh, but that's the way it is.

Can I not just hide them in the drawer? Oh ok then!
Had one just now - it was horrible. Really pleased:)
Gonna do it gonna do it gonna do it.....

One thing that helps is to reward yourself for each milestone. Decided beforehand what your reward is going to be. For example, if you go without a smoke buy yourself something that want but normally would not buy. Also ask people to help you reward yourself.

I just smoked until I ran out and then didn't buy more.

It's important to have something else to occupy yourself during the times when you would ordinarily be smoking. Also, I found it helpful to brag to all of my friends about my ability to go cold-turkey... knowing that they would give me all kinds of shit if I fell off the wagon. Pride can be a useful tool.

Probably because of that whole "they can lead to cancer of the mouth" thing.

Yes, they can lead to cancer of the mouth. Usually cancer of the mouth is not fatal, and relatively minor. And of course there is the emphasis on can.

Cigarettes however will, without fail, lead to lung cancer, which is often deadly and always painful, horrific, etc.

Hardly comparable.

I quit this way:

I bought a pack of Newports (I HATE Newports), let them go stale, and everytime I felt like smoking I grabbed one of those. I didn't make it through the pack.

First, all cancer is serious. There are differing degrees of danger depending on the type, but all can potentially lead to death.

Second, no, cigarettes will not "without fail" lead to lung cancer. That's just silly.

Third, any type of cancer is indeed a "health risk," so yes, smoking cigars are a health risk. It's fine if you believe the risk is worth the pleasure--plenty of people do. But it is a health risk, and any health risk that can lead to cancer is a serious one.

Are you like, 12, trying to rationalize your bad habit?

That is some of the worst and most erroneous medical information I've ever seen on the net. And that's saying something.

Yeah, all you have to do is Google image search "cancer of the mouth" and see what "no health risk" means.
