To people with a spider phobia

Miss Chicken

Researchers at the University of Tasmania have developed what they believe is the first ever online program to treat phobias.
The FearDrop website's first treatment is for arachnophobia, and involves exposing patients to images of spiders.
The website's developers say anxiety from the exposure should lessen over time.
Researcher Allison Matthews says up to 10 per cent of the adult population suffers some form of phobia but many do not seek treatment because it is too costly or difficult to access.
"Online treatments are a cost effective, accessible and flexible way to treat a large proportion of the population," she said.

Rest of story here - I will warn you however there is a photo of a very large spider that is common in Australian homes accompanying the article.

I would love to find out if this program works for anyone here who suffers from arachnophobia - I don't, I actually quite like spiders, so it is no good me testing it out.

So far 800 people worldwide have joined the program.

But, spiders are so friendly and cuddily:

If you tell me the huntsman spider is the size of a US nickel I'll be okay. Any larger and I may have to pass on ever going to Australia.

Spiders give me the 'eww' factor associated with bugs.

Bees and wasps on the other hand... I'd be across the room and out the window faster than you can say 'phobia'.

They can have a legspan up to 160mm, that is about 6 inches.

Ok... my heart is racing just looking at those pictures!

Not sure I could do that study... I just get totally freaked.

Just as a warning, Miss Chicken, those of us who are nearly debilitatingly arachnaphobic probably won't participate in this thread. In fact, knowing there would be pictures, I scrolled straight to the bottom here with my eyes shut.

I just wanted you to know. Also, if I participated in this program, there would be a fire and it would be mysterious.

I was actually hoping no-one would post spiders in this thread especially as I had warned people in my OP that they would see a spider if they clicked on my link.

I think a program that was directed at arachnophobes would take it easy to begin with so as mot to frighten people off of the program.

Kill them all with fire, I say. It's a much more effective way to eradicate arachnophobia. No more spiders, no more arachnophobia.

You spiderphobes need to get this book and read it:

Be Nice to Spiders

I still have this book from when I was young and still cannot kill spiders. I take them outside.

I take spiders outside when I see them. They're just little harmless spiders anyway. Maybe if there was one the size of a cat, I'd be worried.

I'm kinda wierd when it comes to spiders anything smaller then a £2 coin I'm ok with but i cant get near anything bigger.
but I can handle a tarantula i sort of think of those as mice with extra legs.

I had terrible arachnophobia for a long time after running through a giant web and getting a Spider the size of a half dollar on me when I was about seven. Eventually, I cured it by telling myself that I was hurting their feelings by being afraid of them. :rommie:

But Spiders the size of a Cat? I'll retain my fear of those, thanks. :D
