To Boldly Go.....

Plumster

Commander
Is this not the point of Trek?

Surely all this bitching about canon, visuals, actors goes against this? Who has seen it already then and can comment from a position of authority?

I for one cannot bloody wait - 2 hours of a high budget Trekfest is better than two hours of frak all. I cannot believe that the people I thought loved Trek as forward thinking and open minded individuals have condemned XI to the shitter already.

This is really messing with my mind - why not suspend judgement until AFTER it's opened?

Hello by the way - I'm the Plumster.

Welcome to the boards, my friend.

Im so hyped about this event.

I feel like im 10 years old again waiting to see Jurassic Park, or waiting for Indy 4 to come out after growing up watching the original trilogy, although that sucked, i still loved the build up and hype.

All of this has been redesigned for a 2000's audience, having original sets in the shows was ok, it kinda worked as Trek was always moving forward, now they have the chance to do it all again, with a Big Damm Budget and give us Treks first proper Big Damm Movie.

Im loving it all, new sets, new uniforms, well sort of, a new take on a stale franchise is what we need and yet there are these fans who sh*t all over it before we even see footage or hear audio or anything.

Some people have problems, but at the end of the day, its their problem, not ours. They can hate all they want, we can love it all the more because of that. Because some of us arnt narrow minded brainless sheep who love B&B trek so much they dont want to let it go.

I cant wait.

Hello by the way - I'm the Plumster.

Hey Plumster, welcome to the board!

Some people have a problem with people changing what they are used to. I can understand and respect that. What I do not understand or respect are the people who are practically violent in their hatred of this new movie. It's as if J.J. went back in time, beat the crap out of them as a child, kicked their dog, shot their television and peed on their geraniums before flipping them off as he returned to the present. There's no logic, no reason, it's just how some fans are.

I, for one, am excited about the new movie and hope it turns out telling a fantastic story and makes a ton of money.

J.

But, but, but...that would mean waiting to make an informed opinion. That would mean holding off judgement until we've seen the completed final product. That would mean giving those responsible a chance! What are you people, on drugs? No, no, no. They've already failed. Why would they even release this film now. Burn everything, I say. Deny it ever existed. I want Shatner-verse movies with an all Shatner cast. Written, directed, and produced by Shatner as well. That's the only way we can be sure that it will work.

Dude - I'm so with you.

It's not a dirty little secret - it's not ours to hide away. It's a big budget frikking film and it's opening doors in Hollywood like we never thought Trek would again.

I just don't get it. I'm old enough to have watched TOS in the 70's, I remember going to the cinema for the movies, I remember the pain of watching Voyager throwing everything down the toilet and turning it into little more than a soap opera. I remember TNG's first season being totally 'out there' and getting better every time I watch the odd episode from those heady days.

Trek, done well, stands as a testament of story telling and chemistry - that will always be there but why deny a generation the privilige we enjoyed growing up?

If it rocks kids worlds today the way it rocked mine all those years ago and keeps it going in a fresh and up to date manner for another 40 years - then what's the problem with that?

As I say, people who should be looking out are simply staring at their own belly buttons.

JJ Abrams has taken a gamble on his own career with this - a niche movie with a blockbuster budget - he'll do what's right for storytelling and commercial reasons. Why would he stuff it up so badly - he'd kill the franchise and most likely end up directing low budget porno. It would kill his career dead.

It's twisting my melon man so three cheers for JJ - three cheers to the studio for comitting the money and three cheers for the fans who will turn out and support this landmark movie.

Trek with a big budget - read it back and say it out loud - TREK WITH A BIG BUDGET. Woo Hoo...!!!

Like nothing we've seen since TMP - JJ can tell a story - we've got to trust him.

If the characters act like they are supposed to, and the film is fun and exciting, and they "Go Boldly", and it is consistent with most "Star Trek historical facts" then it will be a good Star Trek film.

I don't care how much it does or doesn't looklike TOS.

If that certain "Star Trek Tone" is what makes Star Trek Star Trek, then we have no idea from looking at this handful of stills if that tone was recatured for this film.

Ah but bitching is the point of the Internet. And till Trek actually hits the theaters, the Internet is all we have. ;)

And if you want to see narrow minded psychos, I direct you to the BSG TOS crowd. (Your use of the term "frak" suggests you may already be familiar with these fine folks?) Our trolls are only minor trolls by comparison.

I am one of those fans that is both super excited and also, really kinda nervous about what they do to the universe.
I really like abrams and crew but I like my TOS, TNG and DS9 more. I'm open to changed but I'm not open to a Star Wars version of Trek. I haven't liked a single film of SW and am not interested in seeing that in the Trek universe.
Trek has a lot more meat to it and especially with TOS and some of the films, it was about our world to.
As long as some of that is still there, I'm completely game! Looking forward to it

I am also a fan who is very excited and will wait until I see the movie to make final judgements.

This is the way I look at it, Trek movies 1-10 will still exist after this movie, along with all the series. If I want to relieve old times I can watch them. This movie may take Trek in a different direction starting now, and thats OK, maybe it needs a change, maybe the change will be GOOD. I am going to wait and see. Just cause this movie is coming out doesn't mean everything before it is now going to be deleted from history, it is all still there, and I can go enjoy it still if this movie is a flop or a hit.

Huh? What kind of internet forums have you been visiting? If I want to declare Trek XI a betrayal of the past 42 years of Star Trek, then I shall do so, based on what is currently available. If I want to say the hideous new bridge rapes my childhood, I shall do so, for that bridge is horrible and I'm already having nightmares about it. If I want to bitch about the USS Kelvin's idiotic registry number, I shall do so, for it makes no sense for a four-digit number to start with zero. NCC-514 is good enough. NCC-0514 is the worst idea since TATV.

Rapes your childhood? ... Nevermind, anyways.

So is a phone number supposed to be 111-222 instead of 111-0222?

I am surprised you have not committed suicide base upon what we have seen of the new Trek movie. :borg:

I will be seeing this new movie when it comes out. Most likely within the first few days. I am hesitant about how good it will be. I am finding it hard to see anybody but the original cast as those characters. See new faces play these characters will be difficult. But I will give it a shot anyhow.

I mean I had my doubts when Enterprise came on, whether or not it was going to be any good. (Ofcourse there are MANY of you out there who hated Enterprise). My opinion is that Trek is suppose to go foward. No backward. I actually liked Enterprise. In fact its turned out to be my second best Trek series, DS9 being my fav.
So cause I have my doubts with the film I will not be dissapointed if it isn't that good.

I don't understand your problem with this. Four-digit numbering systems that start off with 0001 (or sometimes 0000) and end with 9999 are very common.

For example, my car registry number (license plate) is XXX-0021 (not really XXX, but I'm not telling the real letters :p). When I bought the car, the guy who gave my the plate pulled it out of a box full of license plates; the next plate in the box was XXX-0022, then the one after that was XXX-0023, and so on. Therefore 0021 was obviously the 21st in that series.

So using your method, they should have just dropped the "00" part, since my plate is the 21st one in the XXX series.

I did a quick Google search for other people using four-digit numbering systems, and the first one I found is that scientists label active sunspot regions on the sun using a four-digit numbering system starting with region 0001.

It seems to me that complaining about something as trivial as "0514" as compared to "514" means that you are just looking for any reason to criticize, especially since a numbering system that uses a consistent number of digits is very commonplace and practical.
