TNG: The Missing Year

L

Lord Garth

FC takes place approximately two years after GEN and Geordi says the Enterprise-E has been in service for almost a year.

So, aside from Worf, what was the TNG crew doing in between Enterprises?

Using all of their accrued shore leave?

Isn't there supposedly automatically a court martial or something whenever a ship is lost (from "Measure of a Man")? Maybe they were all on trial and in hearings for a year or two.

Debreifings, continuing training, vacations, temp-gigs, teach for a sememster, tons of possibilities.

OTOH, episodes like "Farpoint", "Lonely Among Us", "11001001" and "Contagion" make it sound as if the first operational year of the Enterprise-D (that is, the first season of TNG) was also her shakedown year. The E-E might well have been fully operational during her shakedown year, too, performing demanding deepest-space missions like the supposed Farpoint one from the very beginning.

Why is LaForge complaining that they're "ready", then? Is he bemoaning the lack of combat missions specifically, even though the ship has done meaningful exploration and patrol? This is possible, as his complaint does emerge specifically when combat with the Borg is discussed.

According to the latest(i.e. almost ten years ago)editions of the STAR TREK CHRONOLOGY and ENCYCLOPEDIA the 1701-E was launched sometime in 2372 after Worf joined the crew of DS9 and the entire Enterprise-D senior staff with the exception of Worf transferred to the new ship and began serving on her from the time of launch.

Well, for what it's worth, I'm already hearing the complaints from our first crew of the new National Security Cutter (to be commissioned CGC BERTHOLF next month, officially).

We took delivery of the ship from the contractor/shipyard back in May -- and they're grumbling already about having 22 months of training & testing to go through before her first "official" deployment.

So, there's some real world synergy there. Heck, if anything, I'd be surprised that the ENT-E only had one year of "shakedown" or what would probably best be called "OT&E" (Operational Test & Evaluation), to use the RL term.

Cheers,

I can't believe they gave the E to Picard.
He was the star of the show/movies.

Who else deserves it more? Barclay? Morn? Porthos? ;)
Don't be silly. Porthos couldn't have been alive at that time. Besides, they probably didn't install a fire hydrant or tree on the Bridge. :p

Actually, can't you be assigned to and serving on a ship even though the ship isn't actually going anywhere? I'm thinking of the abominable movie Star Trek V, in which the crew is still trying to get it glued together and not expecting to be sent on a mission. They're still serving on it (and some are taking shore leave)...

Didn't they say the same about McCoy in "Encounter at Farpoint"? :p
I can understand a 137-year-old human. But even the oldest dogs don't live much past 20. Given the hypothetical advances in vetrinary medicine, I'm still not going to believe a dog could live over 150 years.

But it would be kinda funny to have Porthos as a Captain:

Communications Officer: "Hailing frequencies open, Sir."

Porthos: "Arrooooooooo!"

:guffaw:

Happens all the time in RL. For our service, it's primarily because the HR / personnel element never matches up with the ship production schedule - fact of life, basically.

Heck, right now we have the core elements of a crew already (i.e. CO, XO, Chief Engineer, and a few others) -- and the ship construction hasn't even STARTED yet. She won't be done, as of now, until AUG 2011...

CONN OFFICER:"Whoops. He just left his liver on the floor. And a paw."

The novels Ship of the Line, Section 31: Rogue, and a couple of other books fall into this time frame.
