TNG Season 8

Nothing wrong with making Will Riker a captain of a different ship, while also bringing in Tom Riker to replace him in the main cast.
Only question is who becomes the First Officer. I'd say Data, because then Tom can take over his station on the bridge and keep the yellow uniform to distinguish him from Will.

That could actually be pretty interesting for a final season. You could have a love quadrangle between Riker Troi Thomas and Worf that works itself through by series’ end and Troi (in my mind) finally leaves the ship to join Riker on the Titan; preferably the one from the earlier books with greater species diversity aboard ship. That is, if it’s the Titan Riker goes off to in this scenario; I never cared for the design.

But before that relationship rekindles (Riker missing his Imzadi to great distraction from whatever mission he’s on, Deanna never quite at home with the distractions and possibilities of Worf and Thomas), there could be plenty of ups and downs and twists between the three on the Enterprise. Maybe even Thomas getting together with Ro, for additional complication.

Data being a hard ass as a commander is also kind of fun. I’m thinking of when he was commander of the Sutherland in “Redemption,” if when he had to dress down Worf in “Gambit,” and being Jellico’s right hand in “Chain of Command.” Maybe we’d see him through newcomer Thomas’s eyes almost from a “Lower Decks” perspective.

Agreed about Data, who should have been a full commander four years before. I mean, he saves Earth from the Borg on the first try, still a LCDR. Deanna finally manages to kill a holographic version of Geordi LaForge after an unknown number of attempts... and he has to call her "sir". Can anyone else see what's wrong with this picture?

I think if season 8 really happened I'd assume Generations would be released a bit later, like after the season 8 finale, then that would give them a new ship for any future series/movies from there.

Maybe due to the events of Ds9 series 2 finale Starfleet would probably recommend to keep families off the ship, due to the Maquis or dominion threat. That'd allow the ship and crew to be in more dangerous situations without the question of how it affects the children, sort of more credible.

Not got much else to add for the characters as there's alot of good ideas here already, I think giving everyone some more development would work well. I think Thomas Riker turning up on the enterprise instead of ds9 would be interesting. And getting the ship more involved with the DMZ, maybe even something in the gamma quadrant.

You know what? Just for that, I'll make Deanna First Officer in my Season 8.
And Harry Kim is demoted to Acting Ensign, Junior Grade.

Maybe this is why they're so careful not to reveal his post-Voyager career in canon. If he gets promoted, it will enrage the crowd that takes sadistic glee in seeing him as an ensign until the heat death of the universe. If he doesn't, the crowd who feel that he got shafted and should have had his hollow pip by "Scorpion" will be equally pissed.

He may not be as polarizing as Tuvix, but there does seem to be some division...

EDIT: BTW, how exactly does he get on the Enterprise in the first place? This is TNG S8 after all.

I'll add him as a secondary character. And all his dialogue will be cut for time in each episode. ;)
(I will be honest though, I never cared for Harry, I always found him either boring or mildly annoying. due to him coming across as rather childish a lot of the time. But my dislike comes from the fact that Kes, a much more interesting character was booted from the show while they kept Kim, Neelix and Chakotay on board)

Bottom line, I decided on Data being the new First Officer not because of some sort of in-universe idea whether he "deserves" a promotion or not, but purely for out-of-universe reasons:
1) Tom Riker needs to be on the bridge
2) Tom Riker needs to be in a yellow uniform to visibly distinguish him from Will, the "yellow stations" are OPS and Tactical
(Conclusion: Tom Riker needs to take over OPS or Tactical.)
3)In order for Tom Riker to take over OPS or Tactical, either Worf or Data have to be promoted into the First Officer chair left vacant by Will Riker.
4) Worf would be a terrible First Officer.
Final Conclusion: Data becomes the new First Officer, Tom takes over OPS and does OPS things, which I'm still not clear what that actually is.
Bonus: Deanna becomes Second Officer.

All four characters had potential, but were badly underused.

Had it been me, I'd have eliminated all of them except Neelix, who at least had a use. TNG and ENT did fine with only seven main characters, and even managed to neglect some of them in spite of it.

Chakotay's death would especially serve a purpose; it would be like a certain event in early Game of Thrones: an indication that no character was safe.

Yeah of course it's chiefly the responsible of the creative team that the characters turned out the way they did.
But I disagree that Neelix was the only one who had a use on Voyager; he was just the cook, while Kes was the only nurse they had (except Tom who was primarily the pilot) and was very much needed on board.
In fact Neelix would have been the first I would have axed, since I think he's the worst character from his very concept.

But I think Harry infuriates me the most because he was chosen over Kes...and then they never ever did anything with him. He was wall-paper for seven seasons.

And neither had to be. Both characters had considerable potential for development. And if Deep Space 9 could juggle over 25 major characters, VOY could have handled ten.

I'm sure I've read in the TNG Companion book that the writers wanted to do this in Season 7: kill off Will Riker and have Thomas Riker join the bridge crew as an ambitious young officer at the helm. That would also give some nice story meat to Troi and Worf (I suppose a bit like the aftermath of Jadzia in DS9).

Ezri got excessive and pretty repetitive focus in Deep Space Nine's last season, I wouldn't want that to happen with Tom Riker.

Ezri was a mistake period. They should have simply honored Terry Farrell's request to have her part dialed back. Introducing a new character so late, and with a war to resolve... one of DS9's relatively few missteps.

The only mistake about Ezri was not having her replace Jadzia two seasons earlier. She was much better as both a character and Trill than Jadzia.
