TNG Rewatch: 7x14 - "Sub Rosa"

Sub Rosa wasn't even worth watching the first time. It's probably the worst episode in all of Trek except for possibly Code of Honor.

I rewatch this one all the time. I love it. It is terrible. Fascinatingly, hilariously terrible.

There's a handful of awful Trek eps that I really enjoy as rewatch guilty pleasures. This, "Genesis", "Ferengi Love Songs", "Profit & Lace", "Spock's Brain"... I've seen each one maaaaaaaaaaany times.

I do always say it makes me really respect Gates McFadden as an actress. She's all-in on this. The scene where she lights the candle and then writhes around by herself seemingly having an orgasm. That's commitment!

After completing my TNG re-watch, I have to say that Sub Rosa is not the very worst of the series' episodes, but it's definitely close. The real stinkers that stand sharply, dagger-like, in mind are:

• Code of Honor (you can forgive this a little since it was a S1 episode)
• Sub Rosa
• Genesis
• Masks

There are plenty of other bad episodes, especially in S7, but these are the ones that I can only imagine someone shouting, "I know it's horrible, but we ain't got anything else -- SHIP IT!!"

As bizarre and dumb as Sub Rosa is, it isn't as unabashedly insulting to the audience's intelligence as Genesis and Masks are.
