TNG Rewatch: 5x05 - "Disaster"

Why did they want to leave the cargo bay? An unknown calamity has stricken the ship and they have no communications with anyone outside. He's he Chief Engineer. She's the Chief Medical Officer. They may have wanted to, y'know, do their jobs.

True but, again, they didn't know (or at least indicate to us) what was on the other side of the door. Leaving the "safety" of the cargo bay could have posed to them, and the rest of the ship, a greater risk than if they had just stayed put.

A greater risk to them...they were more concerned about the ship and willing to take the risk. Heroic stuff.

It's not heroic to do something potentially stupid.

They could either:

A) Be "heroic" and leave the cargo bay into unknown conditions in order to perform their duties. (Which carries with the the potential risk they'd be killed as soon as the doors opened.) Meaning their expertise is lost.

B) Stay put, wait for them to be rescued and THEN go to do their duties in helping people since their rescue ensures that they're safe so their expertise can go to good use.

I was just wondering, because they vent the shuttle bay, I wonder if that moved the ship? That could have pushed an uncontrolled ship into danger, or out of it. But remember in space, there's no slowing down, if it was given a little shove from the air blowing out, it would just keep going.

Yes the air evacuating from the cargo bay would have pushed the ship. But not really in any meaningful way.

Venting the main shuttle bay supposedly moved them enough to avoid the collision with the Bozeman in Cause & Effect.

And I argue that the air in the main shuttle bay isn't nearly enough to move the ship as much, and as fast, as we see in "Cause and Effect."
If you compare how much force would be generated by the depressurizing the shuttle bay to the force the ST: TNG Technical Manual says a maneuvering thruster generates, the shuttle bay would be over eleven times as much.

In Samaritan Snare, Picard was able to maneuver the ship using only a single maneuvering thruster at a time.

:)

It's a TV show written by people with limited or no physics education, and who ignored their science adviser whenever reality interfered with their story idea. That's how depressurizing hangars can move 6 million ton ships.

It's clearly got flaws, but the episode is certainly entertaining, & I believe the main reason was because their obvious intent was to have pairings or groupings of cast members that almost never got to work directly together, like that.

Bev & Geordi getting a plot together? When does that ever happen? Worf & Keiko are almost polar opposites in the cast. Troi, Ro & O'Brien. I'm not even sure how they end up on the bridge at the same time, but it made for good drama. I really like when things get tossed around like that. I'm a huge fan of Conundrum for the same reason

Troi, Ro & O'Brien. I'm not even sure how they end up on the bridge at the same time...

Troi was there to present the primary school science fair winners to Picard and, I guess, sort of stuck around even though none of the other bridge officers were there. Granted, though, the impact with the filament was inside of a turbolift ride away.

O'Brien arrived there to do a "transport simulation" according to his parting words to Keiko when he left Ten-Forward.

Ro arrived shortly after the impact after crawling out of her turbolift, presumably she was coming onto duty.

The various parings around the ship were, indeed, interesting it just would have maybe more interesting if Riker/Data and Crusher/Geordi were forced out of their respective comfort zones like Worf was, Picard was and Troi was.

But, honestly, I'm not sure what they would have entailed which may speak to the "weaknesses" of those characters. What? Have Geordi trapped in the cargobay with a cute ensign he has a crush on? Crusher stuck somewhere with someone who's a better dancer than her? Riker trapped with a subordinate, good-looking, female officer whose clothes have been ripped to shreds and there's palpable sexual tension between the two that Riker cannot act on due to him being a superior officer? Data.... Yeah I've got no "humorous" uncomfortable situation for him.

This was a decent episode but DS9 did it better with Starship Down. This was kind of the start of the "lets have more kids on the show" phase and while it was cute to see Picard and the kids, it was also slightly annoying. I did enjoy the stuff with Keiko and Worf though.
