TNG No Longer Going To Air on Spike This Fall

Two points you're overlooking.

Say they're $45 each.

That's still over $300 for the whole series.

Whether you buy them a season at a time or all at once, that's still a big chunk of change for the series.

Makes no difference over what length of time you spend it. (And it sure doesn't compare in ANY way to the show airing "for free" on TV.)

It's not "for free," though, because Spike and G4 aren't VHF/UHF broadcast channels. You either have to subscribe to cable or a satellite service to watch the shows, so you're still paying for them.

It is something of a bummer as I beleive in the other post we were discussing doing the poor man's DVR->DVD collection. I'll probably end up buying TNG as it is my favorite, but Voyager I think I'd rather DVR. DS9 I'd rather own but let's face it there's only so much of the green paper.
All of this got me to thinking of the original run of TNG which I'd taped on VHS. First season episodes complete with 1987 commercials. Those tapes probably violate some part of the Geneva Conventions under 'adverse conditioning'. But I wish I still had them.

And you've also had the past six years to tape the series. That's what I did back in 2002, and I had the entirety of the series on VHS tape. I didn't start collecting the DVDs until after I moved out of the hosue and had to toss the tapes. By then, the cost of the series had also dropped.

Buy it or don't, but drop the whole indignant "HOW DARE THEY!" attitude. There's enough of that from the anti-prequel people, the 'Scapers, the TOS BSGers, the anti-TOS-Remastered people, the regular TOS people, the No-Trek-Exists-Past-TMP people, the Enterprise bashers, the T&T'ers, the A&T'ers, the Browncoats, the Han-Shot-First people... need i go on?

Well, that's a shame, but, like most folks in the thread, I do have all seven seasons on DVD, so, this news doesn't have much effect on me.

1. $45 is pretty reasonable for an entire season of a show. There are alot of individual movies that come out that cost over $20, and that's for just a 2 hour movie and a few special features. Shoot - for me, right now a season set of Trek would cost less than the price of one tank of gas - which would last at most a week! It's all in your perspective.

2. Nothing lasts forever. At some point *all* of these shows will be off TV. If you can't scrape together $300 over the course of a few years to purchase the sets..or ask for them for birthdays/Christmas every year until you get all the sets...or tape what you want to keep directly from TV, then you have only yourself to blame.

3. Spike is not dumb. They have been playing 2 or more episodes of this show daily for 6 years now. I don't feel like doing the math...but that must equate to TONS of times through the series. They have to figure that by now, pretty much everyone who cares to see an episode for the 20th time either has the sets or has fired up the VCR. They do not cater to the few that haven't, because that number is so small it's not gotta bring in the advertising dollars.

And at the end of the day, Spike TV is a business that is trying to make money.

This will eventually happen to all the Trek shows - DS9 and VOY too. So if it was me and I didn't have any money of my own...I'd be putting Trek on every Christmas list - as the ONLY item on that list. Until I got all that I wanted and would no longer be dependent on a TV network for ANYTHING. Because as anyone who has hung out on any given scifi board for any length of time knows - for a scifi fan to depend on a TV network - ANY TV network - for their permanent fix is folly. Just ask the fans of ENT, Firefly, Dresden, Farscape, or any other scifi show that was cancelled before it's time.

I have all 7 seasons on DVD, and I don't have cable, so this really means nothing to me.

I didn't realize how much I'd spent on the full 7 seasons! I bought them one season at a time over a 2 year period. But sum total, I probably spent well north of $500. Its worth it to me, because I so love watching the shows, but wow, I never really thought about the sum total of the 7 seasons!

I definitely agree that Spike could have done better with their airing of Trek. Was it just me or did they always seem to air the same episodes over and over????

Man.. I certainly would rather leave Spike/G4 off. On DVD I get them in 5.1 surround, no commercials, no edits, no fairy dust digital images/commercials and other chimy noises interfering with it. I really thinkg being able to watch whatever episode fits my mood or interest at whatever time of the day is the primary advantage.

I have a 300 disc DVD changer, but even if I didn't I would still consider the effort expended in getting off of my lazy ass and going up to the bookshelf to grab a dvd better than putting up with the nonsense on Spike/G4.

I have spent easily well over $300 on dvd's in the last six months. When I buy a film on dvd it is often costing me anywhere between $13-20 and that only gives me about two hours of content. At $15 as an average price that would equate to 20 dvds or roughly 40 hours of entertainment. A TNG season (sans #2) has 26 episodes which is about 19.5 hours. Two seasons retailing at about $90 would equate the same amount of viewing time as $300 in induvidual feature films.

I thought it was really laughable noting the absolutely insane retail price of the TNG dvd's when first released. Nowadays it's a different situation completely which I think works for people who retain some degree of sense with their money.
