Good episode.

I liked this episode. Interesting idea with the asteroid field used as a trap for alien ships with the generators sucking up all their power and killing any ship that enters.

Fun things.
Geordi lucking out with the women. He must run a lot of programs with them on the holodeck lol.
The look on Picard's face when he sees Geordi and Leah for the first time. I'd love to have known what he was thinking. The scene to me felt like "ooh caught with hand in the cookie jar mum."
Getting to see a small glimpse of where the Enterprise was being built, even if it was a hologram.

Odd things.
Picard says that the Promelian ship they find should be in a museum and sets up something for that at the start of the episode. Then destroys the whole ship at the end of the episode. Did he have a brain meltdown? The problem was the generators scattered in the asteroid and debris field not that ship. Why the bloody hell blow it up?

Other then that a solid 7/10

2. I think it's to avoid anyone else to check it out and get trapped. It was clear at that point that towing it out of the asteroid field was too difficult. Blowing up each asteroid would be time-consuming and it could damage/destroy the Promelian ship in the process.

I find it weird that a phaser blast increases the power of the assimilators. If that kind of tech is possible, why don't everybody use assimilators in their shields, when enemy fires, you would just get a power boost...

The title.
Ron Jones score, particularly the parts homaging Jerry Goldsmith's score for Patton.

Oh OK I just thought when they ordered a replication of that location what you saw out the lab window was the Enterprise superstructure, as that's what it looked like.

I guess but then why tell all your science people to notify others about your find? They will be a bit irked now that you have blown it up.

Edit: They had those specialists notified BEFORE all that shit went down. Makes sense really. Though they could have had them find a way to deactivate the assilimators.

Depends what is the actual range of phasers and torpedoes, they could have blasted all the generators from outside the field or controlled the torpedo yield if they used those so as not to destroy the ship. That was a valuable historical find and they just blew it up.... That bothered me the most in this episode.

I mean they could have done that off screen and then maybe had a line that a tow ship came to pick up the cruiser for a museum or something.

Yes, use few of those Bajoran sail ships to tow it out of the debris field. The assimilators would be useless.

There was no hurry and Picard could have ordered a couple buoys around the debris field as a warning.

Put out warning beacons. Or leave a shuttlecraft and crew and arrange a rendezvous for it with a Fed science vessel. Yep there were other things Picard could have done. I think we might have to accept he was just a little piqued, and that clouded his judgment. Trap MY Enterprise? Screw you.

That's the problem they had in wrapping up those stand alone episodes in the 24th century shows. Boom...problem solved. Set course for starbase/home. Neither applies for DS9 I know...

I'd like to think DS9 was a lot better written.

Another amusing thing was the way Picard pronounced aeroplane as if it was something truly alien and otherworldly to them.

One more- I don't like the implications of how they described the technology of that era the ship came from, implying the warp capable races a thousand years ago were flying with warp 4 ships and laser cannons?

I agree warning buoys could have been deployed. They left them around the planet of the tar baby in S1, and Armus was probably more dangerous if he'd gotten off the planet.

Yeah, the ending of this one has always bothered me a little too.

Funfacts (From Memory-Alpha) for the Promellian battle cruiser

"The studio model was originally designed by Steve Burg and built by Ron Thornton in 1986 for the movie Night of the Creeps"

They were short on time and couldn't make their own model for the episode, so TriStar lent it to Paramount. It also shows up in two episodes of DS9.
