TNG : 1987 - 2002

If TNG was supposed to be the "most popular" incarnation of Star Trek, then why didn't 2009 reboot the franchise using younger (and of course "edgier") versions of Picard and crew?

because it was a mainstream movie that was made to sell, not please the trekkies

And because it's easier to make a movie where there's only 3 principal characters, not 7-9.

TOS is the version of Trek etched into popular culture, not TNG. TOS was the first choice to reboot. TNG is the second choice. I think it will be rebooted on the big screen eventually like TOS has and before the end of this decade.

Also ST09 indicated a move away from focusing on three main characters and devoted more screentime to the other crew members, particularly Uhura.

TOS, 1991 to 2009 - 18 Years
TNG, 2002 to 2020 - 18 Years

Pencil 2020 in your diaries for the TNG reboot :) I reckon it'll be about 2017-2018 tbh.

What the hell, it's a brand new universe. They can BS some excuse of how Nero's time traveling altered the fabric of reality and now Kirk/Picard/Sisko/Janeway all exist in the same time era.

They did that. In a ten minute segment of Generations.

More popular in first run. Not more popular in the history of the franchise. TNG can't compete in mindshare numbers with TOS's 2 year head start. Plus TNG went out on four bad movies.
