TMP... what's the difference?

I kind of liked how it sort of took you along on the journey.

I find I can put it on to play like moving wallpaper. If I tire of the Vejur flyover, I just sit back and absorb the music.

During the original cinema run, they used to pipe the haunting Ilia Theme through the sumptuously curtained, winding corridors of the art deco Paramount Theatre in Sydney - and I just floated through, like I was part of the Enterprise crew. Bliss!

I've just netted me a full set of the Star Trek Citadel figurines from the eighties, featuring all the Phase II aliens - awesome! :)

"Phase II" aliens? You mean the ST:TMP aliens? ie. Rhaandarites, Kazarites, K'normians, Rigellians, Arcturians, Zaranites, Shamin Priests from O'Ryan's Planet, Betelgeusians, Deltans, TMP tendrilled Andorians, Aaamazzarites, Megarites, etc?

The very same! As luck would have it, I already have the variant Kirk and Scotty so now the only one I'm missing is variant Ilia in uniform.

Sadder than that, I genuinely want to see if I can get duplicates made so I can do some simple head swaps so I have extra zaranite, beltelgeusian, and arcturian crewmen. I might even do an Ilia head swap so I have a makeshift uniform version - the real one seems like gold dust.

Did you know there's also a generic male and female crewmembers in a twinpack? I also bought an extra Dr Chapel and bent the arms and head into a different pose to make a DiFalco (same hairstyle).

I was very lucky that the Citadel UK miniatures were imported into Australian "Tin Soldier" shops (most of which have closed down these days) in 1980. Someone had already raided the batches of twin packs in the Sydney CBD store, and another on the North Shore, each time they restocked and every packet of Klingons and Saurians had always been plundered. (My theory was that someone had created a chess set, or needed the Saurians to double as Gorns for TOS RPGs.)

FASA, a US company came out with a boxed set of Klingons in the same scale (at the same time as their ST II Starfleet set, Genesis scientists set and Khan's people set) later in the 80s.

I only recently scored a pair of elusive Citadel Saurians on eBay. The other Citadel twin pack I couldn't find in 1980 was the K'normians set - frustratingly, the only TMP alien not featured in the various magazines of the day. Luckily, I accidentally bought one alien pair that was mismatched: a K'normian had found his was into a pack with an Arcturian and I had to go back and get more Arcturians. There's also a great little Citadel catalogue that has tiny photos of every ST figure.

You want sad? I bought an extra Rhaandarite set in 1980 because you get only one ambassador and one Starfleet ensign for that set. (Now I have a pair of Rhaandarite ambassadors, one with the head bent slightly!) When I interviewed actor Billy Van Zandt in 1984, he had no idea the UK had created his bridge character as a tiny metal miniature, so I painted up the spare ensign figure (still the only Citadel figure I've painted beyond the undercoat!) and posted it to him. Believe it or not, that little figure even has screen-accurate yellow eyes and black pupils, painted with a magnifying glass and a one-haired brush.

Note that the Andorians (mispelled Andoreans), similarly, come as one male ambassador and one Enterprise crewman. Naturally, the plan was to make the uniformed one into Therin of Andor. I also had plans to do the female ambassador as a custom, although I finally did make one in the Mego 3.75" scale:

Earlier TOS figure supplier, Heritage, did a great set of Tellarites, plus Talosians, Andorians, Romulans, etc, but also did numerous TAS aliens, such a set of Kzinti, some Phylosians and some Skorr.

Lol - I only discovered the existence of these very recently on Grocknard's blog so naturally your blog came up on my search too - it was also your TMP Rec Deck photo that inspired me to go to the high def pictures on Trekcore to create little portraits of all the visible crew.

I was contemplating using a spare Chapel to make Difalco too - lol! I was going to use the crewman pack and a K'normian for spare bodies. Uhura is the only standard 2-piece female uniform, which is a bummer as her hand is attached to her head. Chapel might be a better choice, especially if I want to make a DiFalco, but then any custom Ilia would have to be in either an open-neck or a one piece uniform. Tricky...

I think both Amazzerites look like the same figure but otherwise the others look good. I also bought some TOS figures that came with two sets of TOS heads (2 human males, 1 vulcan male, 1 andorian male, 1 human female, 1 vulcan female, and 1 andorian female) so I will stick those heads on spare bodies too. Although they are a larger scale, the heads are a bit smaller, but I think they will look ok on the citadel ones as long as I can mold an ok neck. Overall, I hope to have enough heads to make 12 custom crew plus the custom Ilia. That should give me 42? crew, which ultimately I want to paint and display with a lit Polar Lights refit Enterprise.

I found a few re-casts on Ebay (rhaandarite crewman, megarite, saurian in one-piece uniform, and a few of the principle crew) so I will experiment with them first before I go to the expense of getting the others re-cast. It looks like it will cost about £100 to get a cast made for about 8-12 figures so I need to choose which ones to cast carefully but it's relatively cheap to run off the figures once I've done that - I just hope I don't run into any copyright issues since they are 30 years old and the copies are just for personal use. I can't see me completing the project until well into next year though.

I still prefer the Special Longer Version aka the ABC Cut ... I wish we would finally get a widescreen version of it on DVD or BD!

Why? Do you really want to see even more of the scaffolding?

Adding new FX to twenty year old movies is just plain WRONG! Would you like old records by The Beatles to be redone with new drumbeats and synths, just because NOW it can be done? That's just sick!

Well Yeah, I would...

There was much furor over the Beatles remasters, the remixes and the entire "Love" project, but it got done and people loved it or hated it, but still bought it. Much like Star Trek fans today and always.
