TMP is the best film. It is not 'tedious' at all

I have never understood why people cal the original movie 'tedious'. I personally love TMP with a passion and would love to see the scenes of Kirk and Scotty approaching the Enterprise extended to an even longer length.

The same can be said with the sequence of the Enterprise entering the maelstrom. I wish it were even longer. So beautiful, so interesting. I often watch this sequence on a loop as I find it utterly captivating. Definitely the best sequence in the film.

I also have great appreciation for the muted tones of the costumes. The cream costumes just look so beautiful on the screen as opposed to the garish red jackets in TWOK.

TMP is the only Trek movie that truly looks like a cinema film.
In my opinion, anyone who finds the film tedious is not a true Trekker.

It's beautiful, considered and epic, and it's got an air of difference that the other movies lack. It doesn't actually feel like "us" in space, it feels like a future development of "us" - not just 20th century people transplanted forward in time.

Indeed. To watch TMP truly is an event. An immersion into the future. The following films - no matter how good - simply feel rushed and cheap by comparison. Standard space fare. If we removed our beloved characters from any of the sequels we could indeed be watching Lost in Space.

It's far from perfect (the characters are cold, and they were the best thing about TOS!), but I'm fond of TMP. It's the best the Trekverse looked until 2009.

It takes valuable time away from the story, and would much better time spent focusing on the characters and the plot. Scenes like in the officer's lounge and in Kirk's quarters.

While admittedly I enjoyed the fly around of the Enterprise, even that could have been shorter.

The film being commented on here is my favourite of all the movies that have been made based on that popular 1960's television programme. I don't find it tedious. I'll tell you what I find tedious: prolonged sequences of glorified violence that occur so often in American movies about costumed superheroes. Know what I'm sayin?

A few things I like about Star Trek The Motion Picture:

• The title The Motion Picture is so much more pretentious than something like The Movie or The Film, I love it!

• The onesie uniforms are silly, I love them!

• The combination of Jerry Goldsmith's score and Doug Trumbull's photography of the Enterprise model makes me jizz in my pants every time I see it. I fucken love it!

Anyway, I also feel the same way. I heard so much criticism towards it, and always found the visual look of the subsequent films to be so much better.
I finally saw it a few years back and I loved it. Like you said, it felt truly cinematic. Relayer1 said it well, it felt like a future version of "us."
I think it's my favorite based on the how grand in scale it felt. Plus the novelty of seeing the Enterprise on the big screen, and even the characters reacted in a similar way.
Surprisingly, when I finally watched The Wrath of Khan I felt it was a little overhyped. Still really good though.

I am disappointed to find out there never was a Star Trek: The Motion Picture: The Video Game released.

Yay! I make the "tru fan" cut in one of the few instances where it actually matters to me. I don't find the film to be tedious.

I used to dislike the film vehemently but after I watched the red letter media video discussing it, I rewatched it and the lightbulb came on and I finally understood the movie for what it was and like it now.
