Greetings fellow Star Trek fans! I’ve been a fan of Start Trek and somewhat obsessed with the TMP film (as well as TOS) since pretty much as long as I can remember. I was born after the TOS series ended and was in syndication. I can remember watching it with my parents on cable and when the movie came into theaters, they took me with them to see it when I just turned 5 years old. I was floored and at that young age seeing the cast on the big screen, the refit Enterprise, the special effects, the Soundtrack, and the overall epic feeling of the movie exploring the vastness of space and V’ger was sensory overload for 5-year-old me. Just like many of you, as a youngster, I drew probably hundreds of pictures of the Enterprise in orbit around planets as well as engaging in battle against the Klingons and Romulans. I guess you could say, the inspiration drawn from Star Trek instilled within me a great interest in drawing and honing my skills as an amateur artist.
Fast forward decades later and I found Donny Versiga’s posts on this form for WIPs of the TOS and film interiors and was so excited to see them potentially offered as a part of the Stage-9 project. I was crushed when they received a cease and desist, resulting in (what I believed at the time) no chance of us ever being able to wander the hallowed halls of the USS Enterprise in TMP and subsequent movie iterations. Then COVID happened.
During lockdown I had nothing to do in the evenings and started to wonder, why don’t I just start viewing tutorials in 3D software and see what I can do myself to try and bring the Enterprise to life? So I picked myself up my bootstraps, downloaded Blender, purchased Adobe Substance, Illustrator, Photoshop, Marmoset, and a bunch of other tools and got to work learning. Then OTOY was announced and I was both excited and disappointed. Excited because it brought the dream alive again of being able to take a virtual tour of Donny’s version of the Enterprise. Disappointed because I had already poured so much effort into learning these 3D tools, building interiors, creating textures and consoles which may have just been a big waste of time.
After careful consideration, I decided I’d just keep going. I’m still very much an amateur but I wanted to share my own WIP of the interiors of the TMP Enterprise I’ve created. I’ve always been impressed with the visual language of the TMP movie most of all and this is the version I wanted to see come to life. Up to this point I’ve modelled every single room from the film. I’m doing a second pass of each room to ensure all the models are as close as I can get to their screen incarnations from the original theatrical version of TMP. Before I started the lengthy process of texturing them and importing into the game engine, I wanted to give everyone a glimpse into my progress thus far.
I have no intention of necessarily making these rooms fit in the actual “real-life” dimensions of the Enterprise since we all know many of these rooms are too large for the dimensions of the ship we’ve been given. I’m trying as much as is reasonable to make a completely accurate recreation of what we’ve viewed on-screen in the original theatrical release. I’d like help from everyone to give me constructive criticism, tips, and any other helpful advice based on what you see here so I can tweak each set piece to make it as screen accurate as possible. I only have at my disposal the same materials available as you all do from the public internet. I’m envious of the OTOY team who probably has every resource under the sun available to do a one-to-one match of each set but alas, I’ll do what I can with what I’ve got.
I’m not doing renders at this stage as I don’t want to waste time with textures and such until I have all the 3D models as accurate as humanly possible. These initial screenshots are going to be straight-up screengrabs out of the viewer in Blender with no lighting, colors, etc. with maybe a slight tweak in Photoshop for brightness/contrast or similar slight adjustments. I’ll also post PNGs of consoles, signage, stickers and every other asset created in Illustrator/Photoshop for the texturing phase so I can get feedback on them as well. Please join me in this endeavor and help me make the most screen-accurate models possible.
*I’m hopeful I’m not violating any legal thresholds by doing any of this but I’m trusting someone will warn me if I am as I have no desire to get into litigation over a hobby. Thanks to all!
TL;DR: I created 3D models of each set from TMP and would like to solicit all your collective help to give me feedback on making them as screen accurate as possible.
