TMP Directors Edition Bluray version vs DVD

The SLV was originally only a TV cut, presented in 4:3 pan and scan.

The 4K boxset includes a fully remastered widescreen SLV with the infamous scaffold (around the airlock when Kirk exits the ship) painted out.

That's what I had on VHS, the TV cut 4:3. All 4 cuts are officially available? Nice! :D

The SLV is only in the "complete adventure" boxset, which is well-worth getting if you are a fan of the film.

Complete adventure? Meaning 4 cuts of TMP, or complete adventure meaning all 6 TOS films? Are you talking about this? It looks like the existing TC and DC releases with the SLV as a third disc. Is that right?

"Complete Adventure" meaning three cuts of TMP (theatrical, Special Longer Version, and Director's Edition). Officially, the 2001 and 2022 Director's Editions are considered the same version.
I edited my above comment before you clicked post reply. It now includes a Blu-ray link, asking if this is it, but you've already answered. As I said before, it looks like it's the existing releases for the TC & DC's, but with a third disc for the SLV. Is that right?

Not quite:

Disc 1: Director's Edition (UHD)
Disc 2: Theatrical & SLV (via branching) (UHD)
Disc 3: Extras (Blu-ray)

The UK/Europe release has two more discs - the DE and the theatrical on regular Blu-ray. These are just the existing Blu-ray discs, so the SLV is *only* available on the UHD disc.

If I just get the TC and DE Blu-ray separately (I don't have a 4K player), will I effectively have everything except the SLV?

On one hand, I like how they did some post-production to fix that little issue as...

It's the bloody freakin' soundstage!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!emphasis!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Yeah, the scene of Kirk adding exposition followed by the 30 minutes seconds of his leaving the ship to find Spock doesn't add much to the plot, but it's rather a nice extended reaction scene that, in true TMP style, reminds us of the sheer scale of the Refit Enterprise - which was a huge aspect to the movie, pun not intended. It's absolutely lovely TO see, especially with the soundstage scaffolding removed, and helping to maintain a sense of scale, not just in terms of 'human to ship size" but also "human to ship to big-honkin' V'Ger size". It's one of TMP's biggest plusses, selling that sense of scale so surely (by the seashore).

What’s funny is they fix the scaffolding issue, but Kirk’s spacesuit still changes completely to the newer design.

Well the SLV is supposed to be"warts and all" from what was shown on tv. But when you opened the frame up from TV to movie frame it became unacceptable to leave the scaffolding there. It would be more scaffolding than ship.

I am still one of those luddites who prefers the theatrical and SLV cuts, warts and all, to the Director's Edition. But this is my favorite Trek film, and I'll take any of the cuts really.

I do wonder why they changed Kirk and Spock's spacesuits when they decided to redo the sequence, though. They already had the original spacesuits. Why go through the trouble and expense of creating two new ones of a different design, when they were under such a time crunch and the budget was spiraling out of control? I personally like the original suits better.

I wonder if the decision to change the space suits had anything to do with how appropriate the design was for the completely re-imagined Spock Walk? And then when they changed Spock's they went ahead and changed Kirk's.

What do the suits in the lockers look like when Spock neck-pinches "Tiny" from Search for Spock?

It's not totally unreasonable. They all bring advantages to the table.

Oh, just saw this (I'm late): https://trekmovie.com/2024/09/04/st...5th-anniversary-steelbook-4k-blu-ray-release/

I believe they were too hard to breathe in and Nimoy's stunt double passed out.

In my mind, I paper it over by head-canon'ing that Kirk switched to the beefed-up thruster suit in an attempt to chase after Spock after he sped away.

1) I watched the untouched Kirk scene on the 4K yesterday that is included as a bonus. Yeah, you cannot get away with that. It really is (as I said above) "more scaffolding than ship". The only reason that anyone would have thought they could use it on TV was because they were cropping the sides of the shot so there was only a little bit of stage appearing. But full frame? Yikes.

2) I'm getting used to the officer's lounge. I think this is helped by the fact that the masking on McCoy in the original when he walks in front of the viewer / window is not great to begin with. My "Tallguy Edit" would still use the original, though.

OTOH, the shots of the Enterprise where they found the original elements (they weren't able to do this everywhere)? Oh my stars and garters those shots are revelatory! The original shots aren't BAD, but this cleanup is like opening a window!

I'm glad they were able to find the intended elements of the Earth for Leaving Drydock. But the way the planet is shown still doesn't make a lick of sense. :) You should be able to see the Earth behind the Enterprise in all of the profile shots rather than beautiful blackness. But hey, it's a movie.

3)
They had the right ideas when they were making the DE and there needed to be much more of a completed soundscape than they had time to do in 1979. But they used so much pseudo-TOS. If it wasn't taken right from the Enterprise B in Generations then they went in exactly the same direction.

Gha! I still can't get this right! I meant pseudo-TNG. Yes, there are a lot of TOS sounds in both the 2001 and 2022 versions. But (it seems to me) that there are a lot more TNG kind of beeps and ticks in the 2001, like on the Enterprise B. I don't hear that as much or at all in the 2022.
