TMP-DE fully restored in 4K…it’s about time!

So if I want to insert the missing scenes from the TC and SLV what degree of grain should I think about adding to the DE to make it less obvious? My eyesight isn't great.

I've just bought all original crew movies on Blu-ray and I am not happy with the way TMP DE looks. Ir was DNRed and has that articifial look which I am not a fan of.

So I fixed that with a grain plate:

Out of curiosity, since this is something I hold little opinion on, what makes one grain better than the other? Is it a specific style or ratio? As in, how did you come to this conclusion for your work?

My biggest problem with the DE's grain approach is that some scenes have frozen grain baked into them. (And some new DE shots have grain in some parts of the frame and not in others.) If you're gonna remove grain, at least be consistent. But that's par for the course for the 2022 DE. The goals were lofty, and much greatness was achieved...but there are also myriad glitches and goofs. QC was lax, or ran out of time and money? Maybe both.

It's funny, I actually learned a lot about the detail-work of matching grain (including a very clever trick for pulling a sample grain pattern out of the movie), color timing and saturation, and almost imperceptibly small movements from the vibration of the camera and film moving through it in locked-off shots from the Star Trek Magazine (the big, glossy one) feature issue on the 2001 DE, which is why it's so weird that the 2022 version has the kinds of problems they spent a lot of effort avoiding in 2001, when the resolution was worse and the TVs much more forgiving.

A few people had issues with the disc freezing. It's not very common.

I've just watched this for the first on 4k blu ray as I was waiting for Christmas so I could be gifted it, so I'm rather late to the party and wow this is a massive upgrade over the DVD.

All the colours of the uniforms and ships interiors no longer seem bland, everything looks so much richer and sharper but the biggest difference to me was the sound, which is punchy and superb.

I liked all the other tweaks they made too, especially the VGER ship at the end.

There's the odd scene that's not right (officer's lounge) but overall this gets a big thumbs up from me and is now the definitive version of the film.

Got TWOK 4k arriving in the post later today so looking forward to seeing that as I've only ever owned that on DVD also.
